Let me think, How many tines have I encountered a 20+% grade? NEVER!
How many times have I gone to the grocery store? HUNDREDS!
I don't base my choices on hypotheticals.

Post #216. Did you detach the trailer AFTER coming UP, not needing brakes, or before going DOWN when you would require medical attention?

Here is the thing. I would not do that road pulling the trailer either with my 3/4 ton or with the 1/2 ton that is likely to replace it if it dies. I go around the Bear Tooth highway instead of pulling across with my trailer too. I am no longer looking for challanges.

And if I encounter bad conditions when pulling I hope I have the sense to stop. And if I do not stop I am going to be going so slow that 1/2 or 3/4 ton does not come into play.

My wife and I did Ebbetts Pass west to east hauling our new 19’ Bambi with our F150. It was a lot of work, occasionally scary, and required more than one brake cool-down break. I can’t remember why we did it but I do remember getting camped near the Carson River in time to hit a late evening Blue Wing Olive fly hatch that had all the fish under every bank looking up and eating eagerly. Worth the trauma.

Remember Mr Wizard?

Mr Wizard was a TV personality years ago that would set up science experiments to show kids. I recall one setup he used to illustrate the concept of chain reaction. He dropped a ping pong ball into a large glass crate full of mouse traps, each with its own ping pong ball sitting on the spring. You can imagine what happened when that ping pong ball was dropped.

Reminds me of this thread😂.

So I guess a 1/2-ton truck is enough

I wish the Mythbusters would come out of retirement long enough to solve this question, once and for all...

I have discovered something! These long truck threads are more entertaining if you read backwards! Start at the last post and go back and it is much more interesting.

The issue is never tow capacity or power, it is payload. I maxed payload and GVWR on my F150 because we bought the Platinum with all the doo dads. Could I have made it work? Probably. But I don't like to push tolerances so I moved up to a 3/4 ton and am now comfortably within all specs.

With regard to the 24% grade, it is possible to overheat your transmission going downhill.

2500 to 3000 payload for a 2020 F150 would be more than enough for me!

I’m not saying it’s ok to run your pickup overloaded, but my guess it it’s done quite often. I’ve seen several half tons pulling goose necks. I’m always amazed and a bit shocked.
I wonder if many accidents are actually caused by running down the road a few hundred pounds over payload? I doubt very many. (But I am only guessing) I used to drive 50,000 miles a year. I did for 30+ years. I’ve driven by countless accidents, I just don’t remember seeing many RVs in accidents period. I know they do happen, but they seem rare, and if I had to guess a lot could be prevented by more careful driving. (Speed and distraction)
I’m also aware of the legal issues always brought up, if you’re in a wreck and you’re overloaded etc..
I spend a lot of time on motorcycles so I guess I’m used to living with some risk in life. A few hundred pounds over payload is something I can live with. Certainly not worth the money and inconvenience of switching to 3/4 ton. If I could fit it in the garage, didn’t blow up the budget, and the ride was the same, I’d be more interested. In the meantime I’ll post here somewhere that I’m on the road and where I’m going so you guys can steer clear.

He must have the virus. He's out of his mind. I have just over 3K payload on my 1 ton truck.
