4 cyl towing : article in RV Buyer's guide
Had a quick stop for coffee and on the mag rack saw an RV buyer's guide. There is a write-up from CanAm about 4 cylinder towing, in which a short Bambi was hooked up to a Jetta TDI, PT Cruiser.
Towing on level ground is just rolling, so in theory you don't need much power. And the AS is very aero. Up steep grades the tow weight starts to affect things.
I've towed a small trailer with my Fiat 500, 500X, boats with a Volvo V70, Jeep Cherokee (6 cyl). What I felt in Fiat 500 was drivetrain overload. Its just not designed to pull that extra weight from a stop, especially on a hill. The rest of it was fine.
So personally I wouldn't do it. As far as payload, some of these compact SUV's are rated over 1000lbs, which is more than a few 1/2 tons :wink.
