Love pulling our 28’ Eddie Bauer with the Touareg TDI. As Andy said, less space for stuff but much more convenient for getting around and backing in.

There are many who tow with these who get a little explanation fatigue so they don’t fallow the forums as much.

One our customers with a Cayenne GTS. (Likely the best tow handling tow vehicle you can buy) named his Airstream “This and the Porsche “That”. Because people often ask “you tow this with that”.

“Explanation fatigue”! We get that a lot towing a 30’ with a Cadillac SRX. 5,000 miles and crossing 2 mountain ranges, we’ve had no problems at all. My wife and I have considered printing cards explaining all the reasons why we don’t need a big truck. But we don’t because it’s a great conversation starter.

Our last trip (albeit pretty flat and doing no more than 60mph) we managed about 16 mpg with our TDI

Air suspension or no?

I’ve read the threads and several are years old and everyone’s use case is different.

We just bought a 30’ safari. 6500# dry.

Will buy an ‘11 or ‘12 CS. Should I get one with air suspension or not?

PS will take to Can Am for hitch reinforcement, brake controller, eaz lift elite and sway control.

I was afraid the compressor would run all the time so I bought the normal suspension. It works fine but I’m wondering the same thing.

I have a 2014 ML diesel with the air ride and it works well. Towing my 25 fb I use sport mode which has increased dampenING over the comfort mode. The air ride keeps the vehicle level under load which helps with load distribution on the TV. I had my setup and hitch reinforcement done by Canam. They set it up in sport mode which maintains a constant height. I don't notice the compressor working ever and would not worry about it.

If I understand weight distribution correctly, air suspension does not transfer any load (or any significant load). I would appreciate, if somebody correct me, if this is not correct.

You are correct. Air suspension does not transfer load from one axle to another on the TV.

Ditto, hence the fallacy of installing rear air bags to pick up a squashed rear end to level, and assuming all is well.

I agree as I've adjusted my WD hitch many times trying to move weight forward with limited success. Having said that, I've been very happy with the tow performance of my Cayenne S.

Which hitch you are using? With ProPride I do not have problems transferring weight to the front axle up to the axle limit.

Just to confirm, your X5 has air suspension, right? I used a Husky Center Line WD hitch with my 25 FC and am currently using an Equalizer with our 27 FC.

No, I do not have air suspension, just standard coil springs.

VW Touareg TDI Post Recall Update Towing

Has anyone towed with a VW, Audi or Porsche TDI after having the Recall Update performed?

I have a 2013 TReg TDI. I had not towed prior to the Recall Update. Last weekend I pulled a 3,600 lb trailer for roughly 20 miles on mostly flat Interstate (I-75) near Dayton, OH. I set the cruise at 64 MPH. The tranny was constantly shifting and running at 1,800 (probably 8th), then 2,000, 2,500 and even 3,000 RPM.

I haven't read where anyone experienced this in a pre-Recall TDI. I have about 2,000 miles on my pos-Recall TDI. The low gear shifting is entirely different when the engine is cold. It extends the upshift in at least the first 3 gears to 2,000 - 2,500 RPM. Do you think the shift changes are effecting towing.

I hope at least one of you has towed with an Updated vehicle.

Thx
