Replacing rubber valve stems

I have a 2017 FC28 with the allow wheels. Can anyone recommend a suitable valve stem source for NON-Rubber valve stems. I have the TST flow-through tire monitors, and prefer them over the simple caps, because if necessary I can just open the standard cap and air up. With the small TST caps, you have the hassle of removing them to air up.

So just looking for recommendation on replacement of the rubber valve stems which are not recommended for TST flow through monitors.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

The flo-thru's are heavier, get the shortest all metal that fit the wheel w/o rubbing. 👍

Our OEM Alcoa's came with metal stems, we use the smaller senders.

Yes.
If you have the same Sendel rims I do, an auto parts store generic 416 won't fit because the aluminum is machined to have a recessed area.
So you need a Dill 902-W which can be sourced from Discount Tire for about $5 each. They have a "shoulder nut" which allows you to get a socket on the nut. The standard length is fine.

I changed my own. Here's a link if you feel energetic.
https://www.airforums.com/forums/f31...ms-183020.html

P.S. to seat the bead, remove the valve stem so more air can flood in with our smallish air pumps.

2x Mollysdad on Discount Tire for Dill valves

I’m with Mollysdad on Discount Tire for the Dill stems but didn’t do it myself. I stopped by the local store and the manager ordered the stems because they didn’t have them in stock.

I made an appointment and was in and out within an hour. The techs were careful to follow instructions on the jack point on the trailer. I’ll definitely go back to DT when I need tires!

I also recommend the Dill valve stems for use with the TST TPMS.

I have used the screw on transmitter caps with rubber steams 2.5 years now with no issues. I just unscrew like normal valve stem covers...I don't use/need the little tool. TST TPMS...no issues.

Our tires will be 5 yrs this coming season. We run with TST 507 cap sensors...on original rubber valve stems...and Centramatics on the original tires. Been planning to have Discount Tire replace to GYE with the Dill VS 902 W metal stems.

Here is the question. Did you have the installer balance your tires with the tire monitors on the stems? I was planning to do so.

No...but it's your call, we also use the Centramatics, have had no balance or run-out problems with the GYE's.👍

Yes - balanced with sensor caps installed.

Yes, I asked them to balance with the caps installed. The guys at Discount Tire were happy to do so.

Note: One of the two techs installed weights on the outside of the wheel. The more senior tech explained to him that’s not acceptable and they rebalanced with inside weights. Easy to do with their computer balancers.

Balance out side the wheel...one of my wheels required weights on both inside and outside? I told him I did not want them showing, and was told they could not get balance on that wheel correct without putting on outside also?

I use the Dill 902-W for my Sendel wheels as well. They work perfectly. Wheels are balanced, and I also use Centramatics.

Not sure I'd do it myself again. Once is enough. Handling tires? Easy but dirty. Breaking the bead? Easy with bead breaker. Removing the old stem? Easy with a razor knife and stem puller. Installing the new stems? Super easy. Reseating the bead? Not so easy. I since learned a tip from the scooter world, remove the valve core and air will flow in faster.
Make sure (go with them) the guys at any tire store know where to jack the frame. My guys from DT mistakenly thought the pan was the frame. I pointed to the rail and they were happy to comply.

Mollysdad, yep that’s a great trick - removing the valve stem. I started my career in the automotive business and changed my share of auto tires.

Reading your description of what it took to do it yourself was the dope-slap I needed to “write the check” to DT.

I do recall another hack for cold, hard truck tires that involved a can of Ether starting fluid sprayed inside the tire then a lit match. I stayed away from that one...

Photo circa 1975 newspaper ad for a Chevy-Buick dealer service department. Had more hair and about 40 lbs lighter there!

Thanks all for the information on the options of either ordering through O'Reilly's or Discount Tire. Neither seem to have them "in stock", but I have time to take care of it before the summer trip around the country. Funny story, the trailer we bought was damaged from the owner missing the mark when trying to jack it up to change the tire. Definitely aware of the possible oops with that!

Gypsydad, it might depend on the equipment the installer had. I understand the tech can select “inside only” on the spin balancer and force it to compensate. Think of it like Centramatics - they’re “inside only” and work.

Or, it could be the wheel and tire were outside the allowable tolerance for “inside only”. My professional experience predates the cool new computer controlled balancers.

Balance

Was not a Tech, either not trained on the balancer or a very old outdated balancer. A Hunter Road Force can tell if the rim tire assembly is good, bad, heavy and or where to index the tire on the rim. Most to lazy to do the work so its slam bam pound on the weight.

As far as replacing stems at home, I have done it several times. First time on the trailer, was going from rubber to metal. The second time was going from metal to Ford TPMS. The third time was replacing two of the Ford sensors that got damaged during new tire mounting.

I use a Harbor Freight manual changer to break the bead on the valve side, swap the stem and reseat the bead with a compressor. Nothing really hard about it.
