I paid $4.29 for Diesel this morning. I told the person who checked me out that a fillup costs almost as much as what I paid for my first car. He laughed, I didn't.

An article in the Vancouver, BC Sun newspaper indicates we can expect Regular Gas to hit $1.48 Liter by June. That equates to over $5.50 a US gal.
Ouch!!!!
Oh well, it is what it is, and a traveling we shall go regardless. Life is too short and too much fun to let the price of fuel get in the way.

My last post on 5/11, a mere 4 days ago, I filled up at $4.259/gal diesel...
This morning, driving by the same station, a gallon of diesel is now $4.409/gal.
Of course, the week before I filled up last, it was $3.999... so in less than 2 weeks, diesel has gone up here 40 cents.
There was an article today in the business section of the San Antonio newspaper reporting that Valero energy is going to increase production of diesel "because that is where the profit is now". Went on to discuss that a big plus in producing more diesel is that everything relys on it - shipping, transportation, etc., etc. They were simply giddy with excitement.
Was talking with a friend whose band travels alot. Not getting paid any more than before... he was commenting that the travel costs (fuel) are getting such that he and his family are having to completely rethink diet and food costs (they live simply); his band is fairly successful, too. Imagin those that are not.
Profits are too huge and I think big oil is commiting extortion. Raising the price to such a degree that the environmental impact on drilling where they've been told not to is drowned out by the all of us. And, they're building up the financial capacity to do it. Methinks that was the topic of discussion the VP had several years ago with the oil chieftans when they discussed the nations "energy policy"... Wouldn't release the transcripts but I believe we're seeing them being played out now.

Yup. We're 108 (from this list) and that's the only one that counts for us. Shall we compare other stats on each country as compared to us?
My point is that we can argue how the gas in the US is not as high as in Eriterea or Portugal (or #'s 11 thru 107) and that just doesn't mean anything as to what we have come to expect from our way of life and system of government nor does it justify the prices that have **suddenly** bloomed & the profits that have been mind blowers. Good excuse, though. Kind of like little Johnny sayin' "but all the other kids do it!!"...
Fuel prices have long been high in Europe & other parts of the world - lots of taxes, too...

Fuel Costs and Summer Travel Plans
My wife and I are planning a trip to the Yukon this summer from Niagara Falls..about 9000 miles return.. beginning to have second thought with the ever rising price of fuel. Is travel going to dry up this summer .. or do we just suck it up and go as planned.. are others feeling like we do right now?

9K miles @ $4US/gal.+/-... if the Canadian math (prices) works for you, do it! It sounds like a beautiful trip. How many time would you be doing a 9K mile trip? Think of what you're gonna see...

I think gas in Canada is around $5.50 US, but in Yukon, it'll probably be more. Anyway, 6th, you'll know the price in Ontario. Yes, it's a wonderful trip to amazing places. We've been there twice and we want to go back.
To sort of answer your question, yes, I have second thoughts about long trips, but we so far have caved in. There is some point when it's just too much gas money. I don't know just what that point is, but it feels close. Our first trip to Alaska, BC, Yukon, Alberta, was 11,222 miles; no trailer. At $4/gal and towing, that's almost $4,000. I'm wondering if the tourist industry there is going to die?
