Door Key just spins around
The front door key just spins around in the cylinder on my 1976 Argosy. I can't figure out how to remove any part of the old door handle assembly. Any ideas?

The tumbler is bad.
Replacing it takes about 10 seconds.
You will need a screwdriver, a metal screw, a little board, and a claw hammer, to quickly remove the old tumbler.
Then, you squeeze the washer on the new tumbler, place it in the hole where the old one was, turn it to make sure you did a good job, and then have a "cool one".

I have all the items you mentioned. What exactly do I do with each item?

Is "tumbler" the same as "cylinder?" I bought a whole new door handle and lock assembly complete with the cylinder shaped thing that the key goes into. I'd like to just replace "the part that the key goes into" if possible.

Tumbler, cylinder, for the entrance door lock, is the same thing.

If it is like my '74 Argosy. The first thing is to take off the inside door handle. Then remove the 4 screws on the inside of the door and one screw on the edge of the door. The whole mechanism then slips out. the lock cylinder is held in the mechanism with a clip that just slides off and the cylinder can be removed from the mechanism. Be sure to get the same cylinder for a replacement, there are a lot of them out there that look similar, but will not work. Can you post a couple of photos of what the inside and outside look like?

You do not need to remove the KT lock in order to change the tumbler.
The tumbler can be changed out in 30 seconds,or less.
Please read post # 2, above.

Translated into English:
Screw the metal screw into the tumbler, then pull it out with the claw hammer, using the board to protect your AS skin. When it's out, squeeze the washer onto the new tumbler and push it in, then test.
That right?

Dave.
Right on the nose.
Make sure the screw goes into the tumbler about 4 to 5 threads though.
If it takes longer than 3o seconds..............well then, you must be drinking way too much beer.

Well, surprise, surprise!! The lock is working OK. When we first tried the key it seemed like it just turned and turned. Turns out takes one and half revolutions to lock it and one and a half turns the opposite direction to unlock it. I guess we got impatient and thought it was just turning and turning, but ....
Thanks everyone for your posts. Now I'll know what to do if it ever really malfunctions. Now on to the next project.
