Rock guard rubbing

This is what I found when I took off the right hand rock guard. Sent a picture to the dealer and they said it looks like there is no contact other than the attachment points and I should clean it with barkeeper's friend. Does that make any sense ?Click image for larger version

No dents or warpage?????

Cleaning may make it less noticeable but what keeps it from happening again?

It should not touch at all...

It appears to me that something dark and blackish got wedged in there sometimes and itched a worn spot. Then the filiform corrosion started.

Nothing fell out. Guess I have to look in there with the borescope when it's shut.

The black is most likely oxidixed aluminum dust from the back of the rock shield mixed with road grime. Mine rubbed too. I polished out the damage with some polishing compound then gringot's Garage All In One Sealant and then used some 2 inch pvc pipe and some thin plywood on the trailer side set vertically the distance of the guard at the rub spot and partially closed it to reshape the guard so it won't rub any longer. I used a light looking up from the bottom to verify the reshaping worked. Saved a 120 mile round trip to the dealer.

Mine rubbed too. But it was due to a crease under the guard which caused a high spot. Either born that way or PO did something. Looked nothing like that.

So the dealer looked at the pics and said clearly something fell in there and they’d quote me a price to fix. But then I shot these with a fiber optic cam. We’ll see what they say. Click image for larger version

Well, you certainly have proof that they are wrong.🥴

If there is no indication of any impact, it's bent, most likely from an improper install. Clearance should have confirmed at hinge and retainer mounting.

Don't hesitate to contact JC's Warranty Dept directly as I assume the dealer will start dancing with the hope you go away. I contacted JC directly several times on different topics - worked well.

When talking to Airstream you might refer to them as Segment Protectors rather than Rock Guards. The Rock Guards cover the glass areas and are sometimes called Sunglasses.

If you get them involved you stand a better chance of a satisfactory result.👍 Direct phone calls & email...do NOT depend on the dealer to do all the leg work.🥴

I’m not saying this is your situation but I know a guy that had this issue and the root cause was a frame separation issue on his front end of the RV. As others have stated I think Jackson Center would be the best to diagnose the cause.

Missed if this is a fairly new trailer but took my 2019 27’ GT in for some warranty work and the dealer actually discovered the segment protector was rubbing. They said they’ve seen this several times before and an incorrect install. Dealer filed the claim with JC and no issue to send a new guard. Seems like a known issue at JC so hopefully, you will get a quick resolution.

Went to the dealer and they will get authorization to replace the guard and the quarter panel.
