Common sense does not exist in the way you think it does.

When I think of “common sense” I think of, “don’t put your hand in a fire.” and “don’t run into a busy street.” But even those aren’t “common.” A two-year-old would probably do both without thinking twice. That is because he doesn’t know any better—he has not learned what is so common to others, and subsequently has not developed that “sense.”

It should be clear at this point that “common sense” is merely a set of assumptions a person makes about a topic in which he or she has explicit knowledge. Everyone is different—their experiences and interests dictate their knowledge. It is something we should try to remember when we are tempted to assume that something is “common sense.”

Common sense is developed by gaining knowledge and experience, connect some invisible dots and help that person to get both.

I am not sure how you reached this conclusion based on my post. Without getting into the philosophical definition of common sense, I think its not right to call someone who disagrees with you (based on a legitimate concern) a troll/fear monger-er/etc. I also think if you need advice on subject matter A, talking to an expert in subject matter B does not make any sense.

The greatest thing about this thread is that it ALMOST devolved into the thread described in post #1... almost. I have faith. Keep trying!

Everyone should chill, if we disagree so what? If we get "insulted", so what?

In the end it really matters not.

Too many worthwhile conversations end with hurt feelings, IMHO of course!

Even if this conversation does not really epitomize "worthwhile", it is still fun!

I don't agree with you. You're mean. I'm going to cry now and watch Golden Girls reruns while I eat a gallon of Rocky Road.

It's not for lack of effort. The problem is the OP stopped the loop at #17 (#17: switch mod_hat=on: close thread), and mods weren't paying attention. As a result the thread continued on without an exit point.

Several people tried to re-loop with a #14 (#14: inject comment completely unrelated to discussion at hand.) to get us back on track, but the mods just kept ignoring this thread when it got back to step #17.

So without a mod to close the thread we are doomed to keep wandering around in the darkness.

That's normally the way we do things around here.

Thus the dire warnings about leaving things alone and the fear of lawsuits all the time.

You left out the possibility that someone actually was trained, knows how, and has experience, yet thinks the idea is the latest form of Kool-Aide and attempts advising against it from every possible angle.

Dogs can be trained, it takes a thinking human to innovate and overcome, to knock down walls, to do what they say can't be done!

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!!
