I think thermostat more likely culprit and did firmware updates last night and we'll see how that goes....

You have it all backwards. The AC input is a typical 3 prong plug. DC is the red/hot, white/neutral and ground. Looks like 4ga or 6ga wire that are bolted on. Ground a thinner maybe 10ga.
