Gorgeous set-up
Absolutely beautiful set-up: TV and trailer. Wish we could have met as you passed through SK. Happy travels back to ON.

We did go through Saskatoon, coming in on 14 which was a bit off our normal Yellowhead route, but we were coming from Red Deer this time and I don't recommend 12 & 51 since they are under construction. It was nasty but we sure enjoyed the travelling solitude and prairie beauty. We also saw one of these but it was rolling east, not stationary like this one in Lanigan. Jim

Claire and I also encountered a state park in Massachussets that woud not let us go to our site early even though it was empty.
Not sure why they have policies like that but I think you will also find that same policy in effect at the Maryland state Park in Assateque

Alberta is in a little bit of shock brought on by not only the impact of lower oil revenues due to the global glut, but also a recent change of governance. It is not clear what the impact will be of the new NDP government, I suspect little, but the Oil companies have acted swiftly to reduce costs and delay expenditures. The result is unprecedented discounts to payments due all the way down the food change leading to substantial supplier losses including ultimately, job losses, except, of course, in the legal community. On the other hand, lots of room in the campgrounds and Alberta is absolutely beautiful so it is still a wonderful place to roam. I am guessing, but given your former employer, you may have spent considerable time there so now is a good time for a visit. Jim

Jim, Yes, I understand the current oil crisis, and it has it's trickle down affect. I never worked in the Alberta Oilfields, but, Love visiting Alberta, it's such a Beautiful place with lot's of diversity in culture. Jasper is one of my favorite parks to visit, and I have enjoyed the Stampede for many years. Western Canada, and the Canadian Rockies are Beautiful.

I would love to come to the Stampede. Could you recommend campgrounds close to the events? Thanks

Last time I was at the Calgary Stampede we stayed at the Okotoks Lions Sheep River Campground. It is located within walking distance of a really nice village and about half an hour drive to the Stampede grounds. It fills up quickly during Stampede week so reservations are required. Jim

State parks I have been to require an employee to inspect the site upon vacating it. Sometimes they do the inspecting just before checkout time and inspect several at that time. I ve seen employees picking up trash and even raking the site to prepare for the next camper. The wait might be worth it. I don't mean that the site has to be inspected before you leave, the just like to be sure it's ready for the next camper. Jim

I would say it was exactly the opposite - under zealous. Pretty much indifference, "Oh, you're here early. Well, you can't get into your site until 3." No offer of maps of the park, directions to the marina, etc., to help us pass the time. We weren't all that thrilled with the lack of hospitality from the office staff. My impression was that they were part timers in high school or college, not full-time park rangers that were around long enough to know how things really work.
As an example of the latter, another park employee who worked at the marina made a comment that implied a lot of RVers make that mistake, and we explained that it was pretty unusual for the check-in rule to be enforced at campgrounds. She seemed quite adept at handling the marina. I had the feeling if she'd been the one in the main office, we would've been sent to the site when we arrived, as long as it had been empty the night before.
When we went back to the office at 3, they handed us an envelope with all of the registration info in it (we had pre-paid for the spot). I think part of the issue was that they hadn't yet made up the registration packets for the day.

The situation I described exists, too. We cannot go to church Sunday morning and be able to check out at 12, the check out time at Corps of Engineers parks. When I ask about being a little late for check out at most parks, the staff is like, "Oh, don't worry about.". At this particular Corps of Engineers park, we have to move the trailer to the parking lot in order to be off the pad at straight up 12 and then go to church. I really don't get it if the site is not reserved. I somewhat understand if the site is reserved. Even if we left the trailer on the pad, it would be gone by 1 or 2. Also, we camp in this park maybe 18 times per year. To follow the rules and not have to pay an extra night, I move the trailer to the parking lot, thus coupling and uncoupling an extra time if we don't have the car with us. We haven't camped in this park nearly as much this year. Hmmm. I wonder why. We camped there for many years before the one super ranger made us aware that we were breaking the rules. All of the employees before "let us slide". These same super rangers make people keep dogs on a leash even if the dogs are not a threat and do not wander from the campsite. These super rangers will ticket a camper for having a For Sale sign in there RV...

Yeah. The few times we've wanted to stay at a place after checkout, the campgrounds have let it slide. We usually want to get on the road early, so it's rare that we ask.

Boulder Mountain, Utah - second trip in a row where we awoke the first day to white stuff on the ground. Spring time in the Rockies, if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it will change...
