Extended run fuel tank

I just bought an extended run fuel tank setup for my two Honda’s. It would seem to me that the tank would need some kind of tube that extends down into it to pick up fuel but it did not come with such. The instructions are not very clear. Any experience with one of these?

Is it a Honda product or some kind of after market gizmo? I see some YouTube videos on how to make one using marine tanks and hoses. Is that what you have?

Can you post some pictures?

Yes, although I am one who made one using a marine tank. The metal caps have no vent. The external tank does. Hondas have a fuel pump. So when vacuum builds in honda tank, it siphons fuel out of the external tank. Works fine, even when the external tank is lower then the honda.

Here's a link to a YouTube video of someone who used a marine tank. Looks like he bought a gas cap for the Honda online. See if his video is of any help.

Here's mine. I didn't watch all the u-tube... but I retained the priming bulb to be able to prefill the lines with fuel. I made mine with marine fuel connectors so they seal when not being used. I made mine in a y, so I could feed 2 hondas. I added a fuel filter in line. Click image for larger version

I made mine a few years ago using the old steel marine tanks. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for those old tanks. I looked and looked and finally found one for over a hundred dollars.

The fuel pump in honda makes it all work so you need to make the honda cap a sealed system.

Which extended run fuel tank setup did. you buy? I have the IPI Bergs 6 gallon System which I can run both Hondas. It has worked great for several years. Here is a video I found on line -

The Honda 2000 series has pumps. You can even put the can below the generators.

I have a couple of aftermarket caps that hook to a split hose and go to a 6 gallon metal marine gasoline can. It runs fine and is a lot less fuel fills... running through the night if you are not in a quiet hours spot.

I don't know how you used the generators, but I have two which were required to run the air conditioner (if I needed it) but now I use an Easystart and do the whol thing with one generator. If I wanted some other appliances I would still use two, but carrying only one has been nice. The six gallon tank lasts twice as long only feeding a single generator.

Thanks all. I have the BERG system. The question I was trying to ask is does a hose need to go down into the 6 gal auxiliary tank. I dont see how the fuel will be picked up even with a pump with no tube extending down into the auxiliary tank. After watching some of the videos on the homemade version I modified it to add the tube. Seems to be working great.

Any of the tanks made for outboard motors already have a pickup tube installed in the tank.

And, yes, the metal 6 gallon tanks are like gold. Especially if rust free.

Correct. Geez, I didn't know that tank was valuable. My dad and I bought that together in 1972, when I was 12. Picked up a new 9.5hp Johnson, which I have gone through and use today on my inflatable dinghy. Both are in great shape. Guess I should lock it??
I have another one that my sister in law gave me along with her first late husbands 1966 6hp merc. I went through that one too. Nice motor. Both tanks are rust free!
