Convert to 50amp

I have a 99 Classic 28 foot that I am considering adding a second a/c but need to convert to 50 amp. Is that a complicated or expensive process? I also need to replace the a/c heat pump. Any recommendations?

You can also add another 30 amp service for the second AC and use a 50 amp to 2x30amp splitter. I always add a 30 amp breaker box inside the trailer for this conversion.

Here are two input options for you to considered if you go this route:
The first is a 20 amp twist on that will need a step down adapter from 30 to 20 amp
The second is a 30 amp that can be connected directly to the 30amp splitter via the right extension cord. This option would be desired, since it would let you add additional outlets in the bedroom without taking away from the factory 30amp feed, which is already close to being maxed out with AC, converter etc.

Heat pump recommendation

I need to replace my worn out heat pump/ac on my 28 foot Classic. Currently have Dometic Penguin. Is this still a good choice for replacement? It never got the rear bedroom cool on hot days.

How did you make out? Our old unit worked fine for us we had a lot of 30c days this summer

Hello Richard,

We have 50A service in our 2019 Globetrotter so I pulled some pages from the owner manual’s electrical section that might help answer your question about what’s involved.

Fifty amp service is really two 50A legs compared to one 30A leg. This allows you to distribute the power between two 50A main breakers so one AC unit will be on one side and the 2nd on the other side.

You’ll need to replace the supply cord, external connector on the outside of the trailer and the wiring from the back of the plug to the breaker panel which also needs to be replaced to handle the dual 50A feed. You probably want to replace the circuit breakers unless the original ones are the same type as the new panel’s.

Once you have the new panel installed you can pull wires to the 2nd AC unit. See the 50A service drawings below for a better idea. It’s not difficult work just time consuming as long as you’ve got electrical skills.

Good luck!
Jeff
