"RV" toilet paper is a scam and you use twice as much to avoid perforating it. Ewwww. Velvety, thick, Double ply, fragrant, home-bathroom kind for me. And I often follow up with oversized wet wipes. Guess where they go...right in the black tank too.

Never a problem. It all dissolves. It's water, bacteria, paper, and waste, mixing up in a slurry of effluent. That flushes right out.

As for smells from the black tank from using it...if there's a smell, something is wrong. The water and bowl seal isolate the tank. So if you smell something, then there is a broken vent to the roof emitting gasses into the coach, or no water/seal in your bowl.

Lots of things marketed to RVers are scams. Toilet paper is only one of many things that is overpriced for what you get when you tack an "RV" label on it.

Personally, I don't care if it's RV toilet paper or regular, as long as it either dissolves before it gets to the macerator pump or else the pump can chew it up into tiny bits without getting jammed up. And as long as I can buy more before I run out. I intend to try using Charmin Ultra Soft— as suggested earlier in this thread— during my next outing, but putting wet wipes in the black tank ain't happening in MY Airstream.

I used sandwich baggies to dispose of them at first, till I realized they were made of paper (the kind I use were even marked 'septic safe' lol) and not much thicker than luxurious home toilet paper. I have found they break down and drain out fine...but admittedly they probably are pushing the limits of "safe" toilet paper practices. I'd rethink it if I had a macerator pump...

Is this an issue?
We've got 4 kids and 2 adults living full time in our AS. We crap as much as the next family....
We flush down at least a Costco size pallet of tp a week..... Pull the plug and it magically goes away, simple as that!
Sometimes a young one will look down the hole, only to find a lonely corn or peanut on the floor of the tank..... That's some entertaining stuff! I never gave thought to issues like this as a reality ��

For those of us with Interstates built after 2009 that discharge through a macerator pump, it IS an issue. Removing a clogged macerator pump to unclog it is a truly nasty undertaking that is NOT made better by the fact that the fecal waste you get drenched with

when the pump comes off is your own.

Although I do recall a time, at Lincoln Parish Park— I think— at one of the now-defunct "Two Weeks From Everywhere" AirForums rallies, that something that came out of a trailer's waste tanks clogged the campground sewer lines. Those of us located downstream of the clog were fine. Those upstream of the clog found their campsites awash in nasty-smelling brown water that backed up to their sewer connections and overflowed. The family that caused the clog was made to feel very unwelcome by those whose campsites became unsanitary cesspools. So please remember that even if undissolved solids flush just fine through your slinky, they may not make it all the way through the sewer lines and may become someone else's problem.

That is why I bring lots of beer, never a problem with too many solids, especially if it is Mexican beer

From all the comments on TP type & hype, I think I will try the old school 1000 sheet Scott brand that we use in the house.
I am tired of the endless buying of the RV stuff. I swear the ladies go through a 4 pack of that in a day or two!
For me, on my own, a roll will last a week or longer.

Well, they do have to wipe for #1 as well as for #2, unlike us guys…

Just accept it as a given, and let it go. You can't ask them to use less and expect them to be happy with the idea.

Isn't the job of the macerator to turn everything into a poo milkshake then pump it out?
Ifthis is the case, no solids should matter as long as there is sufficient liquid content to blend it all up?

Paper towels and baby wipes are really asking for trouble in a macerator IMO, which are simply not designed to shred these materials IMO.

Do some industrial and residential sewer pump out macerators handle this kind of material? Yes, but the macerators in an RV are down-sized and rated for a very specific use.

I agree with Peter, I’m in the wastewater business. Baby wipe are tearing up large industrial type pumps.

For Chits & Giggles I did that test on my Home TP, Scott 1000 sheet, (Otherwise known as 400 grit sandpaper)
The Scott stuff was mostly dissolved after an hour, at least good enough for the RV tank, so I will switch to it for RV use.
I am also testing Bounty 2ply paper towels and after a hour there is no signs of breaking down. I will let it go longer to if anything happens (at least until I get the evil eye from the other half)
