I believe that is Herb Spies' trailer. I've seen that beautiful cover in person and you just can't help but stare and drool.

Seems in the reflection you can see some really chubby people taking pictures

. Now some one is going to try to tell me it is the way the reflection of the trailer makes them look when I know in mine, which is no where near this shiny, it makes you look skinny. Or that's what the ladies say.

In my books that means no matter what, Dave is right

, cause if I don't agree with him, he can beat the living, uh, beejabbers out of me

or sand my trailer with 200 grit.....

Its OK Barry. I'm 6'4" and 250, so I got ya covered. Besides, he's need to come all the way from FLA to do it. Now if he wants to blast something, surely I can find something around here.

A little update to this old thread.
Since I'm not a commercial dealer, I'm not advertising that I'm gathering deposits in order to reproduce these old spare tire covers.

I'm simply pointing out that I have a new link in my signature.

I love the kit Brad, I think it will be great.

But I'm wondering, can it be ordered without the rear bumper mount? I'm interested in mounting it on the tongue, between the propane tanks and the Airstream body.

Absolutely, Marcus.

In fact, due to how expensive it would be to ship the heavy bumper mount - I'm not selling the actual mounts - I'm including the dimensions so you can have a mount welded for less locally. Trying to keep this thing from being stratospheric, and it's not easy.

How is this reproduction project coming along? Did you get a sufficient number of orders to move forward with production?

While on the road in AZ we discovered a spare tire cover on the front of a late sixties Airstream sitting in a very small out of the way trailer court. It would appear that the court was being used by local field workers and the trailer as someones home. No response to the note left on the door as to whether they would consider selling the cover but I'm "working on it".

However, a few days later, we had moved to another area of AZ with our buddies (King O D Road) and Roger and I were doing a small errand and ran across a later sixties Caravel sitting in a yard of a very old motel. In front of it was a '55 Chev pickup that also looked like it had been sitting for quite some time. Roger spied the owner standing in the yard and suggested we stop and talk to him. He was very welcoming, telling us he'd had the Caravel ('69) for a long time, the truck was the designated tow vehicle, and he'd not used either for several years. We think but aren't sure that he suggested the trailer could be for sale.

However, he then invited us in to the area he is using as his workspace to restore the motel (almost done) and to play. As we entered I noticed a large bench with a large aluminum tub on it that then had a piece of curled neon tubing on it. Yes, an Airstream Spare Tire Cover he was just about to cut up to make a yard light out of, and we interrupted him. He'd found it being used as a flower pot and did not know it was off an Airstream although painted on it is "For Perfect Towing - Airstream".

Does anyone know anything about this? Was it a dealer promo thing? Did one of the WBCCI members have it on their tire cover?

It took Roger and I to convince him to part with what he thought would make a unique and novel yard light, but fortunately he saw the wisdom of my offer and took it. Now, sadly, the painting will have to disappear as I polish it so it will make an even better fire pit than King O D Roads.

Isn't life just full of surprises and coincidences? We are still amazed at the timing. Now, if I can just grab the other one, I can use this one on the trailer and still have a shiny fire pit. Life is very good

Roger has a really neat set up. He turns out some really nice things. A year before he did his Caravel he restored a Lil Bigfoot trailer. The lady that has bought it is getting a far better than new rig. His hotrod, and usual tow vehicle, a 1933 Plymouth 5 window coupe, is an ongoing project because he keeps taking on other projects that for many would be overload mode, and he also keeps making what he's done so far on the coupe even better. I wish I had his skills, perserverance, and shop. Mine looks like a bomb went off in it while his looks like a very nicely equiped and well planned out work shop.

If you are ever up his way you should stop in and see them. He's always got something on the build.

Well, I've done some playing with polish on the wheel well cover today and it is going to come out pretty nice. I've certainly got some work to do with regards to deep scratches, a dent, and the inside is really ground up with dirt having been used as a flower pot for quite a long time.

That raises the point - if you are looking for one of these - they are not necessarily on the trailers any longer. They are handy for all kinds of things like wash buckets, fire pits

, and who knows what else people have used them for over the years. Bolt bins? Gasp!!!!

When you are seeing old Airstreams in yards it wouldn't hurt to stop and ask to have a look. They just might have it on the back of the trailer. If not, make sure you have your eyes open for what they have laying around the yard being used for what, a big dog dish? Water bucket? Yard light (eeks).

Does any one know if any other trailer was offered with these, or as an option? Are they Airstream only and if so, what years? It would just be neat to have more information about them.

I'm still as excited about finding it as I was when I was hopping from foot to foot and trying to look calm as I was dealing with the guy. It is just a good thing Roger was there or I may have traded my '05 Silverado tow vehicle I wanted it so bad. As it is, I got it relatively cheap given the circumstances and we know the guy probably either paid peanuts for it given it was a flower pot, or perhaps it was even at the motel (1940's vintage) he was living in/restoring. We do know that in 1962 there was an Airstream event held there that became a regular event for many years, based on a newspaper clipping Roger found on the wall in the local museum (sort of). There certainly are a lot of vintage Airstreams and other trailers laying around in yards, storage areas, etc. just waiting for someone with lots of time to acquire and bring back to life.

Once I get the thing polished I'll post a few pics. In the meantime I'm working out how to mount it on the back given I have my storage compartment door there (1951 Flying Cloud). Think I've got that sorted out but need to mock it up to see. Also have some other things to consider, like adding that weight to the back of the trailer. All fun things to deal with and help fill the days when we are not in a CG somewhere with good friends. If you have ideas, let me know.

BTW, it was great meeting you at DH5. With the weather being so bad we didn't get a chance to tour your '57.

Now this design is different than another I've seen that has a hinged top half so you lift out the tire. I, like many, would love to find or somehow make one! Question: many people have upgraded their vintage tires and rims. Would a new tire fit inside the tire-holder?

The inside diameter of mine is 30" so the max I'd see going into it would be 29" wheel and tire combo. Depth doesn't matter.

We've seen them on the back, and also the front of Airstreams - the one front one we saw was cut to fit the frame.
