door caster?

So, I've searched the forums and can't find an answer for this, why is there a small caster wheel on the upper right corner of the entry door to my 2005 classic?Click image for larger version

When the awning is down and it interferes with the door the door won't wreak the awning. The wheel will push up the awning instead by rolling across it rather than scraping across it.

I have seen some back yard engineering in my day. This takes the cake.
And. What does one pay for an A$ with this accessory?

Back in the 80's, that little wheel was standard equipment on Avions. Good insurance, rather than putting a tear in the awning.

On our 30' bunkhouse, I installed Awning Bows. Worked much better on providing door clearance and prevented water bathtub pooling effect.

So I opened the awning and sure enough that caster protects the canvas when the door swings. In fact it has even 'drawn' a dark arc on the canvas that looks like a faded water stain. I like the idea of staves to support the canvas,if they were just the right length I could store them in the tube.

Backyard engineering? These little devices are commonplace on many RV brands, typically an aftermarket add on. Camco sells this in a wheel configuration. As for the price, usually $4 to $7 depending on where you shop.

PLEASE Do not use the wheel on your door!!!
Though the wheel looks like it will not harm the fabric on your awning, it will very effectively do the same thing as if you didn't have it at all. I have known many people to use these and in very short order the wheel will cut through the fabric or at the very least make a very big Mark in your awning. The very best thing that I have done and will continue to do is do not let your door come in contact with the awning Period.

Here's how I lift my awning just enough to keep my door from dragging on it. I've used this PVC gadget for 5 years with no damage to the awning at all.Click image for larger version

Could you please publish the dimensions and size of tubing used? This is a super clever idea!

3/4" PVC, 4 END CAPS, 2 "T's. Cut 4 horizontal pices about 8" long. Assemble horizontal pieces. Insert vertical PVC any length. With awning tilted for rain runoff, open door and push up awning as needed on your AS. Cut vertical PVC length. Insert into bottom "T". Adjust as needed. Note: there is no standard length for the vertical PVC due to trailer and awning lengths

Great solution. And one could spray paint color of choice. Even aluminum

Great!

One add--use Schedule 40 PVC.

It's lots stronger and thicker than the cheap Schedule 125 thin, easily broken stuff.

Schedule 40 has much thicker tubing walls than 125...about 1/8 inch vs. paper-thin...

This PVC solution put too much pressure on the door's eye brow gutter, causing it to leak...

The short answer... the previous owner installed that wheel to keep the awning from rubbing on the edge of the door ... the real fix? Is simply to put one or two more turns on the roller spring.. if the fabric is taught it will not rub on the door.

I just raise the awning on that side high enough to clear.
