Posted a comment in another thread that we had moved from a 2008 Chevy 2500 gas to a 2019 GMC Denali HD Duramax and thought I would give some of my impressions on towing with the new rig.
First, I did splurge with the Denali options but hey, I am getting older and “need” more comfort. Leather heated and A/C seats, sunroof, navigation, wifi, etc. It is Dark Slate Metallic with Cocoa/Dune interior. Karen calls it my Beamer truck since it has the color combo she was looking at in a BMW.
Here are some stats:
445 HP, 910 lb/ft torque, 6.6 Duramax, Allison 6spd, Curb Weight 7462, GVWR 10000, Payload 2513, Max Trailering 13000 Those numbers are for the Duramax, 6’6” box, 4wd model.
We took the setup out to Mueller State Park on the back side of Pikes Peak just to see what it was like to use the new truck. Wow! What a difference. I told Karen it was the most relaxed I had ever been towing the Airstream. Not that the Chevy 2500 gas truck didn’t do a good job, it did. But this time the engine never had to work hard. Going to Mueller from Colorado Springs is basically uphill the entire way. It was effortless. Got to the park and hit the back-in spot on the first try. (Karen gives great directions)
Starting and stopping were smooth, transitions on the highway to manage moving around traffic were a breeze. I could punch it and pass without any worry for traffic because I could accelerate just like I didn’t have the AS behind me. Pulling away at a stop light I actually spun my wheels when I hit the pedal like I did with the Chevy. I have 100 extra horses and twice the torque as the Chevy 6.0 gas truck.
All in all, I am very happy moving to the diesel. Is it overkill, not really, I just like reserve capacity and not having to strain my rig nor me. Plus Karen was a better passenger!
I did add an ARE topper with rack and on that an Ultimate Rod Case for my fly rods. We are ready for camping and fishing now.
