Hi, to me the 100K warranty on GM and Dodge means little because it is only for five years, not ten years like Hyundai and Kia. Therefore, not much if any better than Ford, for the miles most people drive in a year.

Hi, Ford used aluminum hoods on Lincoln Versailles back in the seventies and some new BMW's have plastic front fenders. I think we are worrying about nothing.

Robert, national average is now 15k per year. At that figure, Ford is done at 4 years/60k, GM and Dodge are done at 5 years and 75K, and the Koreans are done at 6 2/3 years for the average person. So there is a bit of real world difference. YMMV.

Hi, that's what I mean; For most people the 100,000 mile warranty is just a sales gimmick. My Lincoln just hit 100,000 miles late last year and is about fourteen years old. Maybe miles might be higher [per vehicle] for couples who only have one vehicle. We have two, not counting my 59 Galaxie and my motor scooter.

But the mileage figure is proportionally high for all mfrs.....but not for everybody. My fleets, for example, run out of miles in a little over 3 years (100,000) miles for example. With Ford, they're done in 2 years.....so it does matter to some, just not all of us. My 14 year old van only has 65K on it, so I get it. But it does matter to some.

I rolled over 100,000 miles on my 2007 Mercedes ML320 diesel (purchased in October of 2006) before the seven years we're elapsed. I did get quite a few things "replaced" during that time that substantially exceeded the purchase cost of that extended warranty.

Here's the latest from Ford on the aluminum F-150:

Ford repair shops must be certified to fix aluminum-bodied F-150 | The Detroit News

Quite frankly, I was surprised that 80% of service work was done by shops other than dealerships.

I think the issue may be a poorly-written article. Since it wouldn't logically matter for powertrain service whether the body panels are made of aluminum, titanium, steel or lead, I'm guessing that these references are to collision repair work rather than mechanical repair, but the article just uses "repair."

I read it that way also. My observations have been that very few car dealerships do body work anymore. In the last 20 years or so they have always recommended some independent body shop to me, if I asked about body repair.

I suppose Ford has leverage over dealers and can require them to become "certified" in repairing F150s.....whatever that means. Probably a combination of some new equipment and some new training for staff. However I can't see what leverage Ford has over any independent body shops. Body repair is almost never a warrantee issue unless it was an instance of faulty paint or assembly from the factory. I'm guessing in 99% of cases it is simply collision repair that Ford has no role in. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits companies from invalidating a warranty because the consumer had repair work done at an outside shop. If I have my new F150 fender replaced at the independent shop down the street I can't imagine what role Ford would play in that decision. It isn't going to affect the drivetrain warranty.

That said, I suppose that Ford can restrict availability of OEM body parts to its "certified" dealers. But that isn't going to stop the normal aftermarket from popping up, especially if OEM Ford body parts are overpriced. We are in a global market and nothing prevents a local body shop from going online and getting body parts shipped in from anyplace on the globe.

The off shore parts are not always built to the same specifications. That is a common idea everywhere.

36 SS Ford Deluxe The Ultimate Shiny TV

To heck with the Aluminum! I found my next tow vehicle in stainless!

In 1935, officials at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Division and the Ford Motor Company collaborated on an experiment that would become a legacy and a tribute to one of the most dynamic ever developed. Allegheny Ludlum, a pioneer producer of stainless steel, proposed the idea of creating a stainless steel car to Ford. The idea took shape in the form of a 1936 Deluxe Sedan. That car became the centerpiece of a campaign to expose the public to the new metal and its many uses.

It would look cool to see a polished Airstream behind that.

Agreed on the warranty. I am starting to shop for a truck and looked specifically at warranties. Surprisingly they are very similar. I am leaning toward the Ford as it is what I have and am happy with it. I don't have fleet experience; however, my father does as the company has both Chevy and Ford vehicles. His reply on our topic is that overall they had more repairs on the Chevys but when the Fords broke it was more substantial- transmissions, etc. The irony though is that Ford replaced without cost their transmissions. In his sales/maintenance Taurus he drove it 319,000 miles from new over a six year period. There were three transmissions replaced and one engine mount on his alone. That was about it he says. The other Fords had transmissions replaced as well and a similar lack of anything else. The wagon ran good but the seats were worn so bad that they replaced it for him. Meanwhile the Chevys had Oil pumps, water pumps and several other maintenance items replaced during their five year term- some transmissions but not in general.

I am looking forward to seeing this American aluminum truck! I will say that of the trucks. I have looked at so far, the Ram is one nice looking truck. I like their side toolbox and the white Longhorn is nice. Yep, the aluminum Ford has some competition.

Hi Rodsterinfl: Thanks for that input...I too like the Rams for looks, the Ford concept front end looked boxy (in these days of aero dynamics it's a bit like a dinosaur look).
Let me know what your choice may be as I've as yet to take mine out of the barn ....after 3 years on blocks!
I spoke to a Ford dealer the other day on an unrelated issue of my Ford Ranger and he could not offer much info on the aluminum F150 (shroud of secrecy is seems)but he had had a few inquiries.
How'r you getting on with your Safari? Love mine!!
Cheers
