I believe that BBQ is:

Words in general can not mean anything you want them to mean, but they can often mean more than one thing, especially when spoken by a politician.

The main thing is that in different parts of this country, it can vary widely, and the most important thing to do is to travel to each and every region and investigate this phenomena scientifically by generously and thoroughly and exhaustively sampling each and every variety over time at every opportunity.

I myself have been studying this for decades now and I am only in the beginning phase of my research on this very question. Analysis of the data at this point would be premature, and clearly more research is needed. Much, Much more.

Reporting on your findings is optional. Reading these reports is no substitute at all for the experience itself, however.

Barbecue means "cooking with smoke".
So, throwing that slab of ribs on your Webber gas grill is not 'Barbecuing'. (although yummy!)
Putting a pork butt in the Instant Pot does not create barbecue.

Texas BBQ vs. KC BBQ, now that's a conundrum!

How do you know if a BBQ restaurant is REALLY a BBQ restaurant?

If there isn't a pile of wood out back, it isn't BBQ!

Bar-B-Que to me is sauce.

When I walk in BBQ restaurant, I expect to see BBQ meat on menu.

Throwing a slab of ribs on grill is not BBQ'ing but grilling unless BBQ sauce is slathered on the ribs.

I love Carolina BBQ (vinegar based). Tomato based BBQ is good. Dreamland BBQ restaurant is best known for BBQ ribs and BBQ tomato based sauce. Dreamland started in Tuscaloosa near University of Alabama and has a small nbr of franchised restaurant in Birmingham, Montgomery, and even in Atlanta. I want one near my home in California.
