My New 2008 Safari Sport 17' Airstream

Just got done waxing it Monday and will post some more later this week.

I'm a new owner and did not know I was going to buy it until I looked it over.

Nice combo! I am orginally from Wilmington and found my 62' Safari while visiting family. I think you will enjoy your new travel pod. This seems to be a better idea then a Interstate as you have more room, options for storage, etc. Two vehicles for the price of one!

what's a tada? Inquiring minds want to know.

I have a 22' Safari with a rear bath and love it. My brother lives in Wilmington and is very interesred in the sprinter. Maybe I can talk him into hooking up a trailer to it.
I think Airstream is missing an opportunity to bring back the Caravel name to the 17'. Kind of small for a Safari. Good luck with your new toys.

Nice rig Tom,
You chose wisely...had a T@B, no comparison, Tadah with the AS. You'll be a happy camper.
I like the layout, euro finish and simplicity of this camper.

Andrew, nice set up. I also have a 17' Safari Sport pulled by a Jeep. The surprising thing is the Airstream tows much easier than a 12' enclosed motorcycle trailer I have. Looks like your over by Signal Hill too.

re: LOVINGTAHOE, I've got a 2007 Rubicon with the V6 engine & manual transmission. The Wranglers from 2007 and on have a V6 with more HP rather than the old inline 6 of the previous models. The Rubicon also has a different drive train than the STD Wrangler (dana 44's rather than dana 30's and lower gearing). Also the suspension components of the Rubicon are heaver duty than the standard Wrangler. Week-end before last I drove to Vegas from L.A. via the I-15 over the El Cajon pass. Didn't seem to have any problem pulling the 17' Safari Sport.

You can squeeze by the extended bed platform and use the door but it is tite.

I like the 22 SS layout better but it is just a little too long.

No real problems so far but I have not used it much. Some minor issues: I have one rough edge to a panel and I can see a sliver of day lite at the wheel wheel under the closet. The amount of aluminum chips and saw dust on and in the trailer would have been unexpected but I have read here it is fairly common. I have the trailer stored inside my shop and have been running electric space heater with the windows cracked to get rid of the nasty new trailer smell, I all so flushed all the chem treatment from the holding tanks as I will be dumping and flushing the tanks after every weekend.

Another tip, don't leave the key in the door, I have my first dent from doing that and leting the door swing against the door cath

PS: I used Ice wax ,a newer turtle wax product to wax the trailer and liked it. you can run the wax over the plastic with out leaving the white residue. Also the awning was a major trap for a ton of the alumium chips I would use an air compressor to dust the top if I buy another new trailer.

PPS: Oh yeah the tear drop lights all have water inside them, which is stupid, I would say that is my only real complaint. I want to replace them with sealed LED lamps but have not found a direct repacement.

That's, as we say in the software business .. an undocumented feature!

Once you get all of the scrap metal and sawdust out, you'll have another 200-300 lbs of carrying capacity.

This is a long understood problem. I think Silvertwinkie & Lewster worked out the fix. cosmotini has done it. I've done it. Filling up with water is so *@#*&$(#*& common that you'd think the factory would inform their supplier. The screws are only chromed steel and will rust anyway. Take a screw out -- it's metric and you need to find a stainless steel equivalent. The ones I found are almost a quarter inch longer than what was in there but it worked anyway. Find o-rings to fit, slide one up on the SS screw & reinstall. You'd want to dry out the teardrop enclosure first of course.

How to maximize packing your SS 17':


Step one, fill the bathroom and shower with about 20 bagged bike wheels



Step 2, carefully load the equipment



Step 3, Don't stop, (we put in 3 more bikes after this...)




Step 4, Drive a couple thousand miles. We filled the garage with the contents of the Fake Crafter and SS 17'

My wife & I have a 17' 2008 Safari Sport that we love but we are thinking about upgrading to a 19' with the dedicated bed & optional table that converts to a bed. After taking a look at 2003 19' locally we really liked it. Any thoughts on the 19' foots?

are u planning to use the same suv for towing?

v6 or v8?

base wt (empty) on a 19 EXCEEDS the rating.

the 19s are have a gvwr of 4500 lbs which is 1000 lbs MORE than the nissan rating.

total payload for the nissan is ~1100 lbs?

the trailer tongue is 550lbs + lp gas.

that only leaves 500 lbs for people, gear and so on IN the suv.

while it may have the power and brakes to move/stop a 4500 lb trailer...

doing so is beyond the stated capacity and could be problematic.
