Hello all. I have a gutted 71 Sovereign on my hands and I am looking for some advice on re-insulating the inside. I am up in Canada and want to be able to use the Airstream in the winter months (daring I know) as a ski cabin. If I were to drill out the rivets on the inside skin to remove the old fiberglass insulation and then maybe spray insulation back in, am I ever going to be able to rivet it back on, or is there an alternative material I could use?
First of all, welcome to the forums, and congrats on your "new" AS.
This subject is huge, checking in the forum section, with search function, will bring up multiple threads, covering all aspects of insulation in use for AS.
As I recall there was a "don't do it" post from Inland RV a while back re: the spray foam insulation. I am not an expert buy check carefuly as it may stiffen things up too much and cause issues for you. The fibreglass has a lot of give so the shell can flex.
Good luck and keep posting. I'm thinking of some winter trips as well but wonder about the water and grey/black systems.
We have used Prodex in several projects, and it has worked quite well, is light weight, esy to install, and won't rot or mildew. It is crucial that there's air space on both sides of the PRodex for a truly efficient R-value. It is also important to seal it tight against the ribs with their adhesive tape, and where pieces of insulation overlap.
Good Luck with your project!
Thanks everyone for your replies. My next question is, has anyone removed any of the inside panels? and how hard are they to re-install? Looking at it, I'm thinking this could get tricky. Thanks again in advance.
