12volt LED light strip

Question for the Electricians out there. I'm considering installing an Illum LED light strip from Home Depot. I want to eliminate the transformer and wire it directly to a 12V DC circuit. The transformer output is 12V 2amp. Is this possible?

Sure. Just get the polarity correct — diodes hate reverse current.

Just did a LED strip light project to light up the inside of the medicine cabinet, and to add more lighting to the closet, especially the rear of it. Got these on Amazon. A 16' strip of LED light. Made to be cut to any length. About the width of Scotch tape. Peel off sticky back, super easy install. It's made for 12 volts so wiring is a breeze.

Yup. Works great. However those remote kits do not. They don’t seem to last very long so I’ve changed to higher end units whenever I use them.

Was it due to the voltage hike when the engine was turned on?

You can definitely wire them in directly to your existing 12v circuit. I had those 70's florescent dome lights and the ballasts had gone bad in them. I chose to replace with bright white......kind of kept the original glow. Anyway, I just cut them to the length I needed, wired them in with the included adapter on one side, had to solder in 2 wires on the other side (only 1 adapter came with the strip) and then peeled and stuck them on the original light mounts. I did lay a full strip of clear Gorilla duct tape over them just for an extra secure. I did the lighting on the front and rear domes. Good luck with your project!
