How do chemical toilets work?

Hi, new to this site and I have a question about how chemical toilets work; mine has a small, fiberglass tank (probably 25 gallons) and the toilet itself has the foot/ball-valve but it does not have a waterline attached to it, looks like you just spray the inside of the toilet with one of those sprayers like the ones on a kitchen sink (attached to a hose) that's what's installed right now. Although it looks like there is a hole in the back of the toilet for a waterline, it also looks like it has never been connected and the water outlet hole in the toilet bowl has been epoxyed over. I know by the size of the tank that you shouldn't spray too much water down the bowl after use, but it seems like there would be some sort of ligitimate twist valve that you could operate when the waterline is connected to the toilet; or maybe the toilet itself is has an internal valve that operates when you flush the ball valve with your foot but it uses too much water and that's why it's not connected? just speculating. Any Ideas? (Restoring 62 Bambi)

Sounds like a PO did not know how to install the toilet.

Yes there is supposed to be a water connection on the rear of the toilet. This connection is to go to a water line from your water supply.
The sprayer is supposed to connect to the toilet, not the water line.

The sprayer provides two purposes, obviously, one is to clean the bowl with higher pressure than the auto flush. second, the sprayer is supposed to use less water than the autoflush.

There should be two portal on the back of the toilet, one for the supply and one for the sprayer. The foot pedal opens auto flush valve and the sprayer head works just like a sink sprayer, it diverts the water from the bowl to the sprayer head when pressed.
