Mud Flaps??

This may sound wierd... Has anyone installed mud flaps on their Airstream trailer? I would think they would keep dirt off the sewer connection as well as help keep the trailer cleaner during inclimate towing.

Just wondering...

Just WHERE are you towing! I wish my PO had flaps on his TOW VEHICLE! He and his family hunted in Oregon........mostly off on gravel roads. I wet sanded the front of the trailer and was able to minimize all the stone chips. Mud flaps yes.....on the TV.

I like the idea of keeping the mud etc. off the dump valve handles. Every time they are dirty I've had that idea but haven't done it yet.

Airstreams have been around so long there seems to be a set of acceptable options for them. Mud flaps aren't on the current list, but if you went back a while . . .

I see your point though, would keep a lot of crap off connections and bumper. I would think something small and plain would work.

10Smiles, I made mudflaps for my trailer just recently. Not so much to keep dirt off but more to hopefully deflect road debris or heaven forbid, flying rubber from a blow out. I purchased some heavy rubber "stall mat " Material from tractor supply, made a card board template fitted to the rear of the wheel housing, cut the flap with a band saw, screwed it to the out rigger at the back of the wheel well. Looks really cool and hopefully will help deflect any unwanted flying junk. The dump valves sure are sittin' out there as an easy target . Hope I never really need them but adds a lot to the peace of mind knowing I've at least made an attempt to protect the valves and some aluminum. I am not very handy with the camera and picture posting but I will try to get some pics up. John

A design that would work on the trailer would be a Liberty bell shape. Small at the top of the flap where it attaches to the bottom of the wheel well and flaring out at the bottom where it hangs down. Be careful not to make them too long. You might rip them off on the curbs some campgrounds have at the back of the sites.

Here's what I did...pretty simple to rivet to the outrigger just behind the rear tire.

All,

Thanks for the replies. More pictures would be great. I think I will make and install them on my trailer.

We live on a gravel road that can get a bit muddy in the winter (like now), so things get a bit messed up at times (I do drive very slow on the gravel road, but "stuff" still gets thrown up).

Regards,
David

Don't laugh, I just got my 1st cell phone 2 weeks ago. Have yet to use the darn thing but didn't want to be the last kid on the block without one.
Phillip is my go -to Info Tech guy. I can take the pics, he can post them for me. Double team.

Sorry, no pics, but I just modified a set of small store bought car flaps, used SS screws in the outrigger. Works very well to keep that grit off the sewer hardware, as well as preventing the stone chips to the white outrigger storage compartments.

I found these threads while in search on the same topic; as road debris, rocks, sand, etc. kicking up from my rear tires (principally the roadside) have broken my small LED light and blasted my dump valve brackets and water compartment base enough that I need to replace the small light LED fixture and refinish the brackets and water compartment base. In doing so, I'll likely and spray some undercoating on them as well as the underbelly sections to try and prevent further/future scaring.

I also find it surprising the Airstream hasn't seen enough demand over the years to (or gained interest in) making some body arch contoured splash/mud guards that could be added as an accessory for those who travel off of paved roads.

A nice contoured vinyl or rubber guard would look good and go relatively unnoticed IMO.

I built myself a set a few years back. They work great to keep the dump valves clean.

I built a set several years ago similar to the ones GMFL built, but mounted them inside the wheel well so stones wold not hit the moulding. They are a must have if you need to travel on gravel roads. I have 5 miles of gravel in every direction from my home, so it was a "no brainer". They shoud be an option by Airstream. Very interesting that I have never seen any commercially available.

I installed a modified off the shelf pair about 10 years ago. Keeps the dump valve are much cleaner and prevents stone chips and the ensuing rust to my lower wrap compartments.

A grand idea. I will install a set prior to our Alaska trip this summer - should help on the unpaved roads!
