Re: Post #71: The Blackbird (SR-71) was and is the most fantastic design ever. Can you imagine the speed was kept secret until the final dash to the Smithsonian when it broke all the records of the past. Another pilot stated that after an air refueling he accidentally left the throttles all the way forward due to a cockpit distraction. When he realized it, the speed was so high he was afraid of being charged with a Courts Marshal if he revealed that high of a speed. That airplane almost had unlimited speed capability. Airframe skin temperature was the only limit.

Bossier City, LA

One year we stopped at Barksdale AFB near Bossier City. The AFB has a really nice FAMCAMP and we stayed there for a long Thanksgiving weekend – it rained every day.

The road to the RV Parking bordered the base housing area. There is an aircraft display area in the housing area with an SR-71 in it. It was so muddy we didn’t try to get out and walk around in the mud so this is the best picture I got.

That’s a great day trip, highly recommend this to all Navy Sailors, and of course all, I’d add young adults and younger. We ate lunch at their facility, that was a few years ago.

Here are a couple from a hurricane deployment a few years ago. Kinda neat being able to park the Airstream on an active ramp (as one of our support vehicles)
With these brutes coming right by the camper you definitely don’t want to have an awning deployed!

F-22 Raptor Demo Team Flyby

Big fan of Aviation, Air Shows and the many museums around this great country. We've been to many, have lot's of pic's somewhere...have to start posting a few soon.

Weekly the USAF posts a photo digest, Air Force Week in photos. The lead photo this week is a F-22 Raptor Demo team flyby in Alaska. Had to grab and post here. I resized this one to something a little smaller than the original. Enjoy!

Direct link for your own copy: https://media.defense.gov/2020/Jul/1...HY271-9013.JPG

Joshua “Cabo” Gunderson, F-22 Raptor Demonstration team pilot and commander, flies a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor assigned to the 90th Fight Squadron over Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, July 9, 2020, as part of JBER Salutes, a two-day event to show of appreciation to service members and nearly 100 Anchorage-area “COVID Heroes” and their guests. The service members and COVID Heroes, nominated for their support to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, toured various areas of the installation, viewed exhibits and static displays of aircraft, and watched demonstrations by Explosive Ordnance Disposal, military working dog teams, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear experts. Great picture of this Navy Fighter Squadron Forty-One Aircraft (F-14 Tomcat) on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum.

It’s armed with simulated Phoenix, Sparrow and sidewinder missiles. Internally it has a 20mm Gatling gun.

Agreed! Great place...I've got that same shot archived away somewhere...must do some digging. The restorations, maintenance and upkeep of their displays are one of the best I've seen around the country. It was also a great place to catch the Blue Angels practice shows...not sure if they're still doing that.

Thanks for bringing those visits back!

USS Nimitz (CVN-68)

________________________________________
Many years ago, in another life (USN Days), I did a lot of work on aircraft carrier flight decks. This is a short story about one of those days.

Early in 1978 I was assigned – once again – to Navy Fighter Squadron 41. The squadron had just transitioned from the F-4 Phantom II to the F-14 Tomcat. I got to VF-41 in early 1977 and had completed the entire training syllabus required for managing the F-14 and had worked in the Maintenance Control Office until I had qualified to sigh aircraft safe for flight. Then I became the squadron’s flight deck maintenance coordinator.

On a nice calm, clear day I decided to take my camera with me to the flight deck and follow an aircraft from preflight to launch. I asked a member of the crew flying wing with 107 if they would provide me with a picture of 107 when they returned to the Nimitz. LCDR Lindner was known to always carry a camera on every flight and he took the picture of 107 returning to the Nimitz.

We have stayed at the Keesler, FB FAMCAMP. Nice place.

I'm not from SC. I was born and raised in Maine. My wife was born and raised in Greenville. Our RV rig was our only home when we purchased a retirement home in Taylors 14 years ago.
