Back-up camera

I travel mainly by myself and want to get a camera to help with backing up. Most of the cameras I have seen are uaed for hitching assistance but I want something for the back of the Airstream. Any recommendations??

I had camping world install a Voyager Wireless camera on my Airstream. 1000 percent satisfied & the bonus is on the interstate you're aware of what's going on behind you. Beware though, cheaper cameras have signal problems caused by the aluminum interfering with the signal to the monitor in your TV. I've yet to lose a signal after just towing over 10,000 miles in 10 weeks.

We have a 2017 25'FB Safari with a factory installed Voyager camera. We have yet been successful maintaining a wireless connection.

ASA sent us an extended antenna. With that installed direct to the camera, we can get a signal ONLY in an enclosed garage. Once we drive to the open air, we drop the connection.

Anyone else having this issue on a 25' or greater factory installed camera? How did you fix?

Hi, I bought a Garmin RV 760 GPS with back up camera. My truck has a back up camera and I always use a GPS. My GPS shares the screen with the back up camera. Voyagers are good, but I don't need a third screen to look at.

We recently purchased a 2015 Flying Cloud 25 ft (slightly used) and are looking at adding a backup camera to the trailer. Our truck (2015 GMC Sierra 1500) has a backup camera which we really find helpful for hitching up the trailer. Since we are brand newbies, we think the backup camera for the trailer would be helpful too. Spoke to Colton RV (Buffalo, NY) and they have put the Voyager in many RV's. It is pricey, but would go for it if it worked well. FishbyFly's comments have me concerned. Anyone else have results they could share? Also, with the Garmin you put in , Bob, where and how did you attach the camera to the back of the trailer? Is that something we can do or is it done professionally? Thanks!

Thanks for the comments. I spoke with a person at Camping World. They sell 2 models: Voyager and Ferion. They can install and will connect it to the power source in the back. Can anyone tell me what the installation involves in terms of damaging the outer shell? She said the wireless range is 65 feet so there should not be a reception problem. I would really appreciate more feedback about the type of unit and installation issues. Thanks

I just had the Voyager installed at JC recently. They penetrate the skin when they do the install there. The wires are not visible from the taillight where the power comes from. I think Lewster does the same install without penetrating the skin. Maybe he can help you out if that's what you want to do. I love having it, it's a great addition in my opinion.

Are you happy with the garmin back up camera? Did you do your own installation? If so, was it difficult to self install?

I never penetrate the aluminum when I install a Voyager system on an Airstream trailer. No screw holes, no wire holes........NONE!!

The manufacture of the Voyager camera, ASA, recommended a remote extended antenna. It has a 10' cable that screws into the camera plus an antenna that is about twice as long as the standard antenna. Since the cable is running from the camera, I'm interested how to mount the cable and remote antenna. No holes? Loose wires?

Hi, As of today, I haven't towed my trailer with the Garmin back up camera. I did install it myself; I was hoping for someone to show me how their install was done, but could not find one. At first, I installed my camera on my license plate bracket, connected the power to my left tail light, and installed the sensor in my tail light housing. My trailer doesn't have back up lights so I tapped into the tail lights. The signal was too weak, so I wasn't happy with it.

I later, remounted my camera on the back of my trailer body with two sided tape. I move the sensor to the front of my trailer. I used the flexible conduit that I installed for my generator inlet [another story] to run the camera cable to the rear of my trailer for the camera. I now get a great signal. For a power supply, I added a two wire connector to the sensor and connect it to my two wire connector, at my battery box, used for my Battery Tender.

We like the 5" screen Voyager system. Camping World sells it and at least our store has a demo system on the floor to see how the product performs before you buy. We like the 7" screen Voyager even more, but CW does not source that system.

When we got the trailer, we installed a Rear View Safety system that was about $250. We purchased a GoPro suction cup mount and located the camera in the rear window on the inside of the coach. We powered it with a 12 volt jump start battery, so no wiring was required on the Airstream. The TV screen is a suction cup mount to the windshield and powers off the cigarette lighter socket in the dash. Works great in the day time. Not so good early in the morning if the rear trailer window is covered with condensation or rain drops. At night, we get a bit of glare and our experience is much less satisfactory, but we have been stopping earlier in the day so it has become less of a problem for us.

The AS service departments often run specials on camera installations. Give them a call and see what they can offer.
