I have installed 600 olypic rivets in restoring a 34' trailer. I have cut the extensions down to about 1/16", when I use the shaver it dances around the extension. How do I use the shaver? Do I need to hit each rivet with a grinder first to remove stub extension? I have plenty of work inside now that outside is watertight and I don't want to ruin the shaver by experimenting. Seems like I missing something in my approach.
HELP!

use the grinder... It will help and make it a lot easier. It is much easier when the extensions are really short!
Then put the shaver tool over the rivet head and bring it to high speed before you lower it. Don´t lower it on the rivet head before you speed up your Makita or what ever you use, that will make the shaver tool bounce.
Good luck and have fun shaving 600 Olympics is a lot of work!!

I use a Dremel with the cut-off wheel and take the stub down to just above the domed head of the rivet. Like Bjoern says, place the rivet shaver on the top of the rivet, get the drill up to speed and then push in on the drill while holding the shaver in place with your other hand. I've found that a cordless drill works better than a 110 volt powered one because the battery version isn't as high of an RPM. If you're not using the cordless, try it out.
Best of luck and be patient. It takes a little time to get the hang of it but once you do, those other 595 will look great.

Thanks, I thought that grinding closer was required, but hoped to elimanate that step. I will be using a battery drill. Now to touch up each one with a grinder!
Thanks
