Cabinet

I have a 2017 flying cloud. I am going to paint the cabinets white. I bought Kilz primer and Behr cabinet paint. Has anyone painted a late model cabinet before? If so, did you prep before the primer? If you used different paint, did you have good results?
Thanks

paint

I would use a primer first , then mix Flotrol with paint for a no-brush strokes finish..........

I would absolutely not do that. Airstream use Wilson art laminate. You will never get a good bond and with the temperature fluctuations it will eventually fail and peel off. It’s not like paining wood cabinets in your home. And even painted cabinets at home have a limited lifespan before paint gets chipped and flakes off in small pieces.

If you really really want white cabinets there is a new classic 30/33 model with white cabinets.

You’ll be sorry you did and resale value on your trailer will plummet.

Another option is to paint the face frame, if there is one, and then go to a door manufacturer, (there are companies that just make new doors to order), and give them the old doors to redo and rehinge.

Cheers

Laminate Painting

You may regret your initial choice of products depending on the which cabinet paint you chose. But... before you begin painting you need to be quite finicky about the pre-painting cleanse that removes grease and other minute particulate materials from the laminate. Wash with TSP (trisodium phosphate) and wet sand before starting the primer coat.

The best combination - use a urethane-reinforced acrylic paint, such as INSL-X Cabinet Coat. While it is more expensive than ordinary acrylic-latex paints, the urethane-reinforced products have better hiding abilities and will stick better to problems surfaces. Cabinet Coat is designed to adhere to plastic, metal, and urethane surfaces without a primer, but laminate and melamine surfaces require sanding before painting and a primer.

The alternative approach is to apply a 100 percent acrylic, flash-bond primer, such as XIM (Rust-Oleum), Bullseye 1-2-3 (Zinnser), or Fresh Start (Benjamin Moore), followed by two coats of satin or semi-gloss enamel paint followed two coats of clear acrylic sealer. Personally, I'd recommend Dulux Trade Super Primer as the initial bonding primer.

Why do you want to paint?

Have you considered resale value?

Those kind people who are reminding you that the cabinets are Wilsonite not wood are right. I saw a 27 EB last week that had been sanded and painted and passed on it for that reason - though there were other problems too.

The paint job was less than 3 years old and more filthy than chipped. Trailers get dirty fast. Breathing, cooking and sleeping in a very confined space, plus road dust from travel all contribute. Get a bucket of clean water and damp wipe one cabinet door - the woodgrain laminate hides dirt well!
