Pictures from Yellowstone

I've been wanting to go to Yellowstone since I was 8 years old ... so now I'm almost 55 and I finally made it. Funny how life keeps getting in the way of doing the things you really want to do.

Today (Thursday) was our first full day in the park ... and conditions were perfect. Except for the fact that there are still a lot of other people here!

Overnight temps are down in the high 20s ... but we haven't had any problems with freezing. Snow is predicted for tonight ... but I'll believe it when I see it.

We spent 2 days at the main geyser basin a few Septembers ago. It was so awesome we could have spent 2 weeks there. First sight of Old Faithful was with snow falling. Enjoy what God has created! Jamie

Yellowstone

Porky,

Boy am I jealous, Yellowstone NP is my all time favorite park. We were there briefly over father's day weekend. The boys and I went fly fishing on the firehole river.

BTW did I see snow on the national radar yesterday morning in Yellowstone?

I spent four days in Yellowstone at Old Faithful at the same time (week after Labor day week) 12 years ago. Yes, it can snow. That's a fact unless global warming has changed the situation.

One day? Wow, great pictures.

Those are some beautiful pics, Porky. I've always wanted to go to Yellowstone too. Maybe when I'm 55? We always plan it for the following year and life does get in the way. One of the years it will become a priority and we won't let anything else get in the way. When's the best time of year to go? We don't want to fight the crowds and I want to get some fishing in.

Porky -

Did you by any chance enter the park's north entrance? I saw a 34' Classic Ltd, quite possibly a 2004 model, driving south toward Gardner on Rt 191 a couple days ago.

My wife and I are presently staying at the Yellowstone's Edge RV Park, about 20 miles south of Livingston.

September is probably one of the best overall times to go to Yellowstone country, if you can accept the cooler nights. Where we are, which is only about 35 miles north of the Park, it's normally about 10-15 degrees warmer than many places in the park, because of the lower elevation I suppose.

Did you hear about the 2 guys that were recently attacked by a grizzly when hiking near Shoshone Lake - that lake's not far as the crow flies from Old Faithful?

Hope you enjoy you're stay, and if you happen back this way before the end of the month, stop and say Hi.

John

ps - to flyfishr - I caught about 15 trout yesterday in Yankee Jim's Canyon on the Yellowstone River, and never saw another fisherman.

Sounds like September is the time to be there. I'll stay clear of Shoshone Lake though, thank you very much!! Enjoy your stay John and post some pic's.

September is pretty nice ... plus all the animals are on the move. The crowds aren't too bad ... but we thought there would be less people here ... still, not too bad.

We saw a handful of fellows flyfishing on the Madison and Firehole. At least that didn't look too crowded.

No, we're at West Yellowstone ... drove down from Bozeman. We did spend a day in Livingston ... but that wind blew us all the way back to Bozeman. I don't see how folks can stand to live there ... nice town though.

I'm glad we didn't hear about the 2 guys and the grizzly. Are they OK?

Here's the link to the newspaper story about the attack - apparently, they weren't seriously hurt:

Thanks for the memory jog and the pix, Porky. It sounds like you are having a whale of a good time. Page and I were there about 12 years ago, and were just amazed at the beauty. And this was just a year or so after the fires. We were there in July, and there were plenty of people. But - for the folks concerned acout crowds - Yellowstone is always Yellowstone. If you get a chance to go, then go, no matter when. It's a huge place and plenty to see.

A few years back my wife and I visited Yellowstone again. We were camped (SOB Popup) at the madison campground. I grab a flyrod and head down to where the Madison River starts from the Firehole River. I am catching small rainbows that are feeding on on the surface (elkhair caddis #16) along the bank. On the shore a small crowd forms and they are all photographing my flyfishing display (not). After some time I look to the other shore and see a very large moose drinking from the river about 10 feet next to me. I move out of the way and everyone thanks me!

One more photo ...

Since this is an Airstream forum ... I thought I better post this photo.

We also spotted quite a few Airstreams where we are staying (Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park) ... there's a real nice brand new Safari LS parked near us. Haven't had a chance to meet them ... as they are never there.

We just returned from Yellowstone too. Had snow for 3 days in a row, so the Christmas cards are in the works. We stayed at Fishing Bridge and noted a lot of Airstream on the highways.....beatiful country we live in!
