Ugh
5 more inches of snow last night here in central NY. Man I can't wait until I get the SOTR out on the road headed for Maryland.. I leave on Tuesday towing the trailer to Quantico, VA until Sunday. I will then tow the trailer to BWI airport where I fly to Charleston, SC until Tuesday night, return into BWI very late, will crash in the trailer on I95 just south of BWI and await for Frank to Caravan over to Great Falls! Frank, I'll be in the rest area on I95 just south of you. Good times!

OK, about what time in the AM are y'all planning to be at Great Falls? I just might get out of Chattanooga in time to camp somwhere close off I-66 Tuesday evening. If y'all will let me, I'd love to meet up with this officially unofficial caravan.

10am
On the latest Episode of theVAP - at the very end, Frank made a call for people to meet up at the Visitor center of the Great Falls National Park at 10am on Wednesday morning. We'll meet, shake hands, and then go see the falls, and then begin the meander downtown, tour the streets and then head south for Mt. Vernon.

Thanks Rob, the park is in northern Virginia...Riverbend Park Visitors Ctr
8700 Potomac Hills St
Great Falls, VA 22066
703-759-3211 I would give directions, but I think it would be easier if you were to look it up on a map or do a map quest for it. 10 am we will meet, and probably head out from there by 11 am. When coming in 66 check the signs carefully, I think truck and trailer is not allowed past 495, it might just be commercial vehicles, but pay attention there. So glad you might unofficially join us in an official manor. You do have a white tux and long gown for the rally? You did get the official dress code mandate right?
"THE OFFICIAL MANDATE".... Wear what you want.... no one cares.

Thanks for the info guys. Guess I need to download the latest episode of the VAP. I'm still trying to catch up on all the PRE-2008 episodes.
Great Falls is programmed into my Garmin, I'll check into the "truck and trailer not allowed" issues, and thanks for the heads up on the OFFICIAL DRESS CODE MANDATE. Now, where's my evening gown . . . . this ought to go well with my hiking boots.
BTW, my last VAP listening adventure included some reference to "polished turds". Rob's not allowed in my trailer with an ice pick.

I think it's just commercial vehicles that aren't allowed but I may be mistaken. Also, watch the HOV. If you're heading inbound in the afternoon it shouldn't be a problem, but be aware that I-66 inside the beltway is HOV-2 only during rush hour. More info here and here.

It's pretty easy to get to, but make sure you go to the Virginia entrance. There is a Maryland entry, but it will land you on the wrong side of the river!
Here are directions.
I would suggest taking the George Washington Parkway into the city. It is a scenic route overlooking the Potomac River and a more direct route from Great Falls. Sightseeing info on that road can be found here.
FWIW, I think you probably could travel on Rt. 66 inside the beltway. According to VDOT the restriction is for "Heavy-Duty Trucks (two-axled, six-tired, or larger)." However, I will call VDOT on Monday just to be sure.

In trying to keep this simple, I'm rethinking this. I'm now looking at exiting I-66 at Fairfax County Parkway and going north to Reston. An overnight stop at Lake Fairfax Park Tuesday the 8th and I'm only about 8 miles from Great Falls. I could even sleep in a bit.

Here's wishing all of you WDCU ralliers a sunny and wonderful Cherry Blosson Festival from one of your faraway members in Missouri. We wish we were there with you to celebrate Washington's beautiful cherry trees in blossom and to rally around the Airstream campfires. Someday we'll be able to head East and join one of the WDCU unit's fun gatherings...until then, we'll bend an elbow in toast to all of you! ~G

On the road
I head out around 2pm today for an eventual rendevous at Great Falls National Park, Virginia next Wednesday and then CBR. I've got to work in Northern VA and then fly to Charleston, SC early next week - so I'm headed south down the I81 later today with the 58 SOTR. I'll be working on my plumbing in Northern VA this week. Only 9 days left until CBR starts!

Looking forward to seeing you at CBR, where happy hour never ends. I suppose it's no accident that your post was number "76".

Although I am not going to this rally, I had to post - I'm in DC today for a meeting and have to say that the trees are in their full glory and should be for the next 3 weeks. Ya'll are in for a treat. I keep reading and want to join you for next year, maybe join the WDCU for just this reason.
Have fun at the rally.
