WDCU Cherry Blossom Rally 2008

The planning is well under way for this years 9th Cherry Blossom Rally. See the info on the Washington D.C. site.
This rally usually fills up so contact the coordinator early and come on out.
There is always lots of vintage trailers at this rally.
WDCU Rally schedule_?

My registration has been in.... Howdy, I am planning a mini guerrilla style caravan for the CBR. I want to put together a carravan to go where we are not allowed. From what I understand, trailers are not allowed into downtown DC. I say lets just go anyhow. I am good at pleading ignorance and what would a quick spin hurt? We could meet in Arlington VA and come across the 14th street bridge, go right past the Washington Monument, hang a right at the museum of natural history. Go up the hill past the Capital and then go out Central to the rally location. If anyone is interested, shoot me a line.

So far... we are planning to arrive at the rally site sometime mid-afternoon on Wednesday. Along the way we are definitely stopping in Jackson Center and Fallingwater... and other points of interest TBA later.

Lot's of work to be done on Lee's Caravel prior to the trip. It was de-astrovented on it's last trip, including the lifters, so we are planning to install a fantastic fan in the small vent location and use those lifters for the new (VTS) astro-vent. It's also scheduled for a new axle and we will likely be adding a converter since the 12v and 110v systems are completely separate now. Lastly, Lee has devised a method of converting the black tank outlet to a modern two pin arrangement. Cross your fingers for an early spring.

No worries.... one look at me and they will not be thinking terrorist, they will be thinking lets search that trailer, bring in the dogs. DC is actually very easy to navigate and a quick spin should be no problem. I sure hope no one gets the bright idea of asking permission. It is OUR national capital after all.

Oops, I've already talked to GW... he said it's fine as long as you let Cheney ride shotgun. LOL!

I'm in! Sent the check two weeks or so ago.

Edit: By "in" I meant for the rally, not the drive downtown.

WDCU Photo Op in DC

Good idea 62overlander - -WDCU needs new photo in DC.
But, not to rain on your parade, I suggest you find out just where you are allowed to tow a trailer, drive a truck or something similar in Washington, DC. Yes, there are many areas you can pass through, but I believe you will be stopped, questions and prevented from proceeding around the Mall and the capitol district and some buildings. I also suggest you look into getting a special permit to drive on the Mall. Start today by contacting your congressman and see what they can do. Lets have everyone contact their representatives. It would make a great photo op. and it is a great idea. If they let a caravan drive on the Mall will they allow a stop for photos?

A delivery driver told me that he was stopped and told to turnaround. I guess because it was a van with no windows. The Homeland Security folks, the National Park Service police take their jobs seriously, follow orders and don’t care who you are or voted for. The DC cops show not mercy about writing tickets- -the city needs the money. They do that to keep us safe in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” So be brave and exercise your “pursuit of happiness.” Good luck.

Doug, I love the ladder frame you can see in that photo... is that custom?

JStanley, I was hoping to not have to gain permission. Seeking permission will make it formal and controlled. We will be told where to go and when to go. We will probably be escorted and we will be charged a huge fee to have the privilege to drive through our nations capital. I will go and scout the route this week. I will look for signs of restriction as to where is okay and where is not. I was in DC just recently and there were countless big trucks driving around the area near the mall. I saw many of those mobile billboards driving around everywhere, even in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I would love to see the publicity generated by the cops pulling over 5 or 6 Airstreams on Constitution Ave... CNN would have a field day with that. I was trying to keep this caravan small and informal. I wanted it to just be a bunch of enthusiasts out for a drive through the capital. Asking permission takes it to the next level and will turn it into big event. I will listen to what others involved want to do, and proceed in that direction. Is this when a committee needs to be formed? I suspect I know what Wally would do....

Why not form a protest group and then we could set up on the mall. Maybe the unethical use of aluminum in beer cans. We could march around drinking beer, from bottles

just a little follow up... a trip permit is required. The permit will run $50 and is good for six days it can be obtained online through District of Columbia: Department of Motor Vehicles - Information - Tickets & Hearings - Driver's Licenses Point System I guess the question is it worth the fee? If you get to the mall just before 10am there is parking right on the mall for oversized vehicles. Might be nice to have a trailer for breaks and all, but $50 is a bit of money for just a photo. Like I said earlier, I will do what the group wants...

I think that's for commercial vehicles, not RVs. At least, that's how I read that page.

I have been searching through DMV, Park police, state police sites... not a think about trailers not being allowed to through downtown. I called DC 311 and they said a trip permit was required. I am personally leaning towards just doing it and taking my chances.

Aluminum & Medical Mental Study

Shacksman. I think you’re on to something. A protest group against the unethical use of aluminum in beer cans. Great!

If I remember right, beer drinking Alzheimer’s patients have been found to have traces of Aluminum in their brains. Makes them light headed, I think.

The committee of Doctors Against Anecdotal Anomalies in Hospitals (DAAAH), reported in a study published in a recent issue of the Journal of Interesting Nonreproducible Things (JOINT) that one or two a day is good but against the law. I think they said to remember that beer is good any way. Now what was it about the Airstreams?
