Refilling 1lb 'Green Bottle' Cylinders

Does anyone know if it is possible to refill a 1lb propane bottle off the Basecamp low-pressure port and what hardware it would take? I have an old Coleman two-burner stove that I like to use when the weather is nice and I like to be able to work over at the camp picnic table rather than within a few feet of the AS.

We have a 2021 BC 16x so we are dealing with this port and hose: https://www.airstream.com/blog/basec...ssure-lp-port/

Here is the stove and the 1lb tank I am referring to:

Thanks for any help and info!

Transferring from the low pressure port will not be effective due to the regulated pressure on that line. I have seen discussion on filling the 1 lb bottles from 5 gallon tanks, check YouTube.

Alternatively, you could obtain a longer low pressure hose and supply your stove directly from the low pressure port, that is how I use my Camp Chef stove and fireplace.

To refill your 1lb tank you need to be connected directly to the larger tank bypassing the low pressure regulator. Here are a couple of devices which are used to fill the 1lb tank.

I've done it ever since getting the 'Q' Grill.
Helps if you put the one pounder in the fridge, works better when cold, but you'll never get to 1lb

Legal and Illegal

I was one of those also refilling 1 lb bottles
Until I read the label
I forget
Is it a $250,000 or $500,000 fine?

Legal to refill
Highly illegal to drive them on DOT roads.
For Good Reason.

I learned that putting the bottles in the freezer got them much more closer to full.

I thought everything was fine until one summer I left some outside in the sun
The bottles sidewalls buldged.
They were no longer safe.
Now I know why it so illegal!

So it's illegal to refill, but legal to buy the adaptor[/URL]....odd

You don't really pump anything and there's no danger of 'over filling' it's strictly a pressure filling, one tank to another. You would be doing good to get 1/2lb transferred.
I fill from our upside down BQ tank to the 1pounder.
POI they don't last forever...I bubble test for leaks and buy more when needed.

There is a 1 lb tank that is certified to refill - not cheap however: https://flameking.com/product/refillable-1-2/

Refilling the disposables is not safe, imo

Costco sells a 5 lb refillable tanks and worthington makes one as well - cute but super spendy. The upside is that no refill kit is needed. https://worthingtonindustries.com/Pr...rtable-Propane

Legal to Refill

My understanding:
Totally Legal to Refill them.

Just highly illegal to transport them on public roads.

So, Free to refill and reuse them around your own property all you want.

It is not “The Propane Police” to be worried about.

It is the lawyers and how much of your life savings that the legal system would love to takeaway from you. That is a huge risk.

Not worth it. Buy the version of DOT legal to refill and no problems.

I am wrestling with getting a 5 lb bottle or maybe an 11 lb. then I think about the convenience of the super easy to exchange 20 lb bottles, and then remember back when I did carry one of those for just that purpose, and them remember how big and bulky it really was, and then think the 5 lb or 11 lb would be a hassle when it runs out during a meal. I have not crossed over to the changing out the grill to accept the low pressure port option, and not really liking that solution. So end result: Keep burning through 1 lb bottles until I break down and try a 5 or 11 lb bottle.

5 lb with refill kit

This kit looks cool. See photo.

Uses the same refill adapter that anyone already refilling 1 lb bottles already has,
But adds the flexible hose long enough to be practical trying to refill the 5 lb type bottle.

The Worthington 5 lb bottle seems to have an advantage over the Flameking 5 lb bottle in terms of better stability sitting on a campground picnic table bench seat. That seems like a big plus.
But it comes with a “Worthy” price

My first thought is it would solve the problem of what happens when a 5 lb bottle runs empty during a meal……… but the refill time and hassle of trying to refill at the campsite off one of the 30 lb bottles would not be practical during meal prep.

So back to still carry a 1 lb bottles for when the 5 lb runs out unexpectedly.

So back to carrying 3-4 one lb bottles and “ Living in a Material World.”

But eats at my heart.
It just seems so Not Green to throw those Green bottles in the trash!

I bought the $20 adapter and filled a few of the one pound tanks off of a 20 lb tank. Felt risky while I was doing it, and after filling a tank for the second time, it bulged noticeably almost immediately. So, I lost the adapter, and don't do any refilling anymore. I've also gotten away from using devices that can only consume those 1 lb tanks. So in an effort to be green, I think not using them at all is even greener than refilling them and risking injury.

Yup, the disposable 1 pound tanks are designed to be filled ONLY ONE time at the factory by precise weight. Any other method is dangerous and illegal as far as I know.

Note that refillable one pound tanksEXIST, cost a bunch, and have a “ten percent” valve built into them. They are also marked as refillable. Not worth the trouble, IMHO.

I use six of the aforementioned https://flameking.com/product/refillable-1-2/ refillable tanks and rotate them. I built a refill tool. As noted by Robert, to be efficient you need to flip the sending tank upside down so that you are transferring liquid to the small tank. The refillable tanks have a little 10% valve that you crack open and stop filling when it starts "spitting" liquid. This ensures that there is room in the tank for heat expansion. I did fill the coleman cans for a while but without a relief valve and "iffy" leaky neck valves they were more trouble than they were worth. As others have noted, better to travel with the small cans empty and fill them as you need on site. - Brad

I used to do this a lot. But I had several of the reused bottles leak, etc. after refilling. I just don't think they are robust enough for multiple uses. Had enough issues that I decided it was dangerous and I became very uncomfortable.
Instead, I purchased a refillable 5lb bottle with all the same valves and safety features of a 20, 30 or 40lb bottle.

I keep one with the grill and one as a spare. I would not refill them even if I could. I only use the portable grill when we travel and what I like is that it is portable and the bottles do not take much space. I selected this grill to be portable.

Exactly...I soap--bubbles NFG. I'm thinking about the 5lb'r.
If it fits the Q I'll go for it.

You have made the assumption that the pressure in the big tank does not exceed the rating of the small one. I don't know whether it does or dos not, but it is a consideration.

I just bought a Q1000, but I haven't used it yet so I can't comment. It does "fit" with an adapter hose. Weber sells them, but I already had one, and there are less expensive ones than the Weber one.
