Propane Tanks while towing
I recently purchased a Flying Cloud 26 U. The previous owner said he always left the tanks open while towing to power the refrigerator. I saw an instructional video saying the tanks should always be off while driving. Apparently even a law is some states.
Does anyone have advice on the best practice?
Thank you,

Personal choice. A wide majority of people travel with their refrigerator running on propane. A smaller number do not. The only time I have shut my tanks off was when it was posted at tunnel entrances and on ferries. I am not aware of any state that ban propane use on the road.

When on the road I run the refrigerator on propane. So thus one tank is open.

Have not been able to find any state restrictions against propane tanks open there are some specific tunnel restrictions in the North East. British Columbia has a law about propane bottles being closed. I run with mine open.

I run refrigerator on propane while traveling, including when fueling TV. I would close when a tunnel or ferry required it.

I drive with propane tanks open, frig turned on propane, and heat on when needed. In the bed of my truck, there is a spare gas can with fuel and a gas generator with fuel in the tank. Lastly, I drive down the road with diesel in my truck tank.

I’m with Stuart (or Stuart’s Dad) - leave fridge on propane while traveling except when restricted. Including while in truck lanes at Loves or T/A getting diesel.
My wife wants to kidnap Stuart. [emoji23]

I also routinely tow with propane in use for the refrigerator. I have not yet encountered any notice of restrictions while towing, but I do vaguely recall seeing signs posted at some major cities (possibly Atlanta ?) saying no propane on certain paths through town. I have not had to make a choice like that yet but it seems likely there would be areas where such restrictions will be enforced so be cautious and keep eyes open for such warnings.

Open road, I’m not worried about keeping a bottle open to run the fridge.
Tunnels, tho’... if a tunnel arcs up then down, leaked propane can drain, but if a tunnel goes down then back up, like a tunnel going under water, any propane that leaks out can accumulate. So, yeah, I’d cut propane off if the tunnel calls for it.

We run with 1 bottle open & refer on. All our TV's have been diesel.
The only exception I can remember is for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel combo.

When on the road we run the refrigerator on propane. Leave both tanks open.

Propane Tank Status While Driving
What we’re all worried about re LPG flames in RVs is the possibility of an “incident” in a gas station, thus the many laws across the land forbidding gassing up while propane-fed flames are active.
Roberta and I drive with our bottles OFF. With our particular refrigerator, we’ve found little temperature drop with three hours driving and an “acceptable” temp drop with five hours driving. Ice has held on a day with SEVEN hours driving, and that’s what we’re most wanting after such a day—ICE.

I tow with bottles off and refrig off
Have read that there can be an issue with the flame being blown out during towing.
whenever we stop for the night or a layover I open the tanks and start the fridge
the fridge has never warmed sufficiently to spoil food -- this even includes a recent trip where I did a 13 hour 650+ mile push on the way home -- normally we try to limit our legs to 3-4 hours of drive time -- fridge will not warm noticeably in that time.
One other thing I did this trip that helped -- I had a 1/2 gallon milk carton filled with water and frozen (prior to trip) that I kept in the freezer compartment -- it helped to maintain the cold when fridge off, and gets refrozen when the fridge is turned on.

What happened to that feature that turns off the frig when stopped and turns it back on?

We normally run with one tank open and make sure the refrig is lighting after we turn it on. I didn't do that one time and the refrig timed out on the number of times it tried to ignite and couldn't due to air in the line. Temperature rose quickly in the very hot 95+ degree temps while traveling 3 hours. We now freeze our orange juice and take a couple of containers with us. One in the freezer and one in the fridge. I'm pretty sure that I did see a video from Colonial AS that said propane off while traveling. We each have to do what we are comfortable with.

We have always run with both LP tanks on to keep the refrigerator going while Lucy is underway. We have been doing this for fifteen years, and we have over 2,200 nights of Airstream camping.
