Grant's Canal

Abortive attempt to dig canal across Desoto point, to avoid Confederate guns. Near Delta LA.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later, and in our case, it took 7.5 years - an Airstream caravan. Or, a mini-caravan, because we drove all of 50 miles to get from Texas Airstream Harbor to Ratcliff Lake.

Diesel being $3.90 per gallon (in Texas!) is starting to make people think twice about where they want to go, and why. It’s not a bad time to take a closer look at our own back yards.

This is the first “camping trip” for my husband and me in 10 months. Early last year, I lost a tire and almost lost my rig with it. In response, we did a big suspension upgrade, and a tires upgrade, and a new TPMS - the usual life-eating, wallet-eating Interstate project. Then as soon as I calmed down from having my life flash before my eyes because of getting stranded on the Eastex Freeway during Friday afternoon rush hour, someone shot out my windshield as I was going up the Gulf Freeway, and I had to bail on that trip, too. And it wasn’t just any windshield. It was my 3M CR-70-tinted windshield, a big loss. After a blow-out and a bullet in rapid succession, I needed to take a break.

Ratcliff Lake’s campsites are nicely separated. Only two other Airstreams are visible in this distance in this shot. It’s funny to watch the other campers wandering around wondering aloud why there are so many Airstreams in one place.

Our new Interstate 24X. With the NH winter, we've only done a bit of driving around to get the feel of it, but we're getting up to speed with the operation and starting to outfit with a few things. Got a teak mat for the bath, mattress for the bed, some additional hooks & rings, camping grill, etc. etc. Can't wait to de-winterize and hit the road!!!

Crockett Texas, Houston County seat, town square. That yellow place to their right serves very good food at a reasonable price. American, nothing innovative, but the o-rings are to die for.

Diesel rose another 70 cents here SINCE YESTERDAY. It’s up about a buck per gallon in THREE DAYS, now at $4.79 per gallon in Texas.

There’s a trending Air Forums thread right now named something like “At what fuel price do you simply stop RVing?”. At this point, I don’t know a single person who isn’t hitting pause before making plans. Fearing that diesel will end up in the $5.00 - $7.00 range, we topped off our tank today for $124, which may prove to be a steal.

This from FB - it looks authentic:

..."Bath time" - tooo funny.

Oh WOW. You truly can not go wrong with either of the AI colors. Jet Black. Iridium Silver. Arctic White. They each stand out quite beautifully. Love the photos.

We landed on Jet Black but love them all. I am a little late to this party but we just recently acquired our 14.5 AI 24 Lounge and catching up on these chats. We are parked in Paradise.

Not a perfect composition here, and bear in mind that this was taken with my husband’s iPhone - no fancy equipment.

I see these types of photos online and I have mostly assumed they are either fake or so heavily processed that they bear no resemblance to reality. But there ARE locations where the Milky Way really does look like that. There are no artificial light sources between our location on the far northeastern tip of North America and France. That allows the natural light to shine through.

Parked at the Colter Bay Marina one night for a photo shoot. Street lamps had been replaced with bulbs that can turn white or red for research on the effect on local fauna and efforts to "rewild the night sky".

As I said on IG, what a dream come true for a Houston girl - visiting the world’s largest Buc-ees (so far; see news link below). Seventy-four thousand square feet in the interior space, and I still had to weave my way through the crowd. One hundred and twenty gas pumps. Not yet fully built, but the grand opening was 3 weeks ago, and they are introducing Tennessee to what they’ve been missing all this time. OMG, especially in the Gatlinburg area, which has always been horrendous for tourist services (big on attractions, but with logistics almost nonexistent - until now).

News media:

World’s largest Buc-ee’s opens in Tennessee, but it won’t hold the title for long
