Will 7 inches be enough?
Title was a cheap way to get attention.
I just picked up a rock tamer from Goodwill for $40.00. When mounted on my hitch of my 2500 GMC gasser the passenger side flap is 7 inches from the end of my tailpipe. I seen that there can be an issue with a diesel exhaust being too close, will I be in the same situation? I’ve just put it on to check fitting, clearance , etc. But having second thoughts after measuring the tailpipe to flap. I’ll go to plan B which I haven’t researched yet, of changing the tailpipe to vent out the side rather than back. Any real life experience appreciated.

I would go to an exhaust shop and have the pipe moved to the side. I did that on my Duramax so there would be no problem. Cost me $30.

Yep, have the tail pipe turned - have seen tamers with exhaust screens but I would have the pipe turned to the side

I took a straight edge ruler and went around the tailpipe inline with the length axis and marked the mud flap. I used a scroll saw to cut out the elliptical exhaust opening. That was years ago and nothing has borne since then.

I think you want to do something. Mine is about 10-12 inches away and the exhaust has affected the rubber flap. First it has deposited black soot on it, put a bit of a bend in it, and rubber is developed more cracks on that side.
Mine are cheap Amazon flaps so I don't care too much, but next set I'll probably bolt some sheet metal over the rubber.
Also GM gas truck.

You’d be surprised how fast hot exhaust will melt a mud flap just driving a couple of miles in town , ask me how I know .
Turnout the exhaust , cheap and quick at muffler shop .

We bought a stainless end deflector to put over our tail pipe. That diverted the flow more to the side and downward.

Not enough!
Yea I would get a 90° elbow. Your exhaust temp at the manifold is upwards of 1200° when pulling a hill and the cat could heat it again. Don’t know how much it would cool by the time it exits the tailpipe but I believe it would burn your flap!

There are stainless 4” round exhaust ports available from Rock Tamers that can be easily cut into the rubber mat. I added them on my Dodge Ram

Banks, the diesel wizards, makes a kit for this. I put one on my truck and it works great.

Rock Tamers makes/sells a metal plate that fits on the back of the flap for the situation you are concerned about.

2019 Duramax here with the shield. This is before I started using them. In short I ended up rotating the flaps as far rearward as I could to get max distance and even with the shield the flap still warped significantly and exhausted melted all the plastic but covers along the top. Still functional but the flap gets hot especially when pulling a grade
Can't modify tailpipe on the newer GM diesels w/out voiding emissions warranty since it's all part of the new/improved diesel emissions crap

Heat Shield
I have used the Rock Tamers with their heat shield installed on a 2020 GMC Durmax diesel for 10k miles without any issues. I didn’t change the angle of the exhaust.

Tailpipe
They do make a exhaust shield that can be added to the rock tamers
Being a gas I don’t believe the side pipe bend modified would be a problem

Ditto the heat shield. Very easy to install. No need to modify the pipe. Comes from Rock Tamers with all hardware.
