Yhottys. You really enjoy a great variety of foods. I am a pretty big foody person, but many of the things you post I've never heard of. You are expanding my culinary exploriations. Thank you for that. Plus , being in SF and eating out as you seem to do, have a large dining out budget. Keep all your meals coming, I have to look several up to see exactly what they are. Love it. s

Sempi,
Thank you for your kind words. We both are fortunate to be living in the Bay Area and grateful for the ability to dine at some great restaurants.
Thank you as well for posting your meals. We love "hearing" about what everyone's having for dinner.
We'll look forward to more of your posts.
All the best,

New Year's Day
We had dinner in Alamo with Gemma's family on New Year's day.
So, if you haven't already figured out that Filipino and Hawaiian people like to serve a lot of food when they get together, we've got another example for you. (Plus, it was New Years Day, so spending the day with family and having plenty to eat is meant to set the tone for the rest of the year.)
This time Gemma did a lot of cooking. Murray did a lot of prepping - he's a wiz with a knife, if we do say so ourselves.
Gemma made:
-Black eyed peas with ham hocks and ham shanks. We were going to serve it with Murray's creamy cornbread, made with cream, fresh corn and poblano chiles but we didn't have any cornmeal so we went another route. We had black eyed peas Brazilian/Feijoada style. http://www.saveur.com/article/Travels/Beans-and-Meat Which means we served orange slices and deep fried julienned collard greens. Big hit with the family. We think it was because of the deep fried collards. (Images of the collard greens before and after being fried.)
-Arroz Caldo, chicken and rice soup, but this time we made the "soup" much thicker and browned the chicken, so it was almost like risotto.
-Pancit, by now most of the folks that who this thread know what that is. Bean thread noodles with sauteed carrots, celery, onions, cabbage, lop cheon (Chinese pork sausage), kamakobo (Japanese fish cake) and shrimp balls.
Murray made roasted pears with goat cheese, similar to what we had at the Tavern at Lark Creek a few nights before. Big hit too. (Image of the pears and goat cheese before they were roasted.)
He also grilled these gigantic portobello mushrooms that he had marinated in balsamic vinegar and shallots. Another big hit.
We started the evening with a fruit and cheese plate, with the same yummy truffle triple cream cheese that we had for Christmas. There was also a sundried tomato, pesto and cheese terrine.
Also on the table was roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry chutney, roasted winter vegetables and jai (it's a Chinese vegetarian dish wit noodles traditionally served on Chinese lunar new year, but they thought, "What the hay?" and served it up.)
Dessert was a strawberry ice cream cake with fresh strawberries and caramel sauce.

Hi Sempi! Oh, there was rice. It's kind of a given. Unless we say, "potatoes" or "grits" or "no rice", there's rice.
Happy New Year!
Your friends,

For me I may have to start a thread, 'What's for Breakfast this morning'? I am making my breakfast the 'big' meal of the day. I've been trying this for a year and it works for me....but Holiday 'festiveats' are tough to ignor. A decent breakfast of perhaps eggs and wheat toast then a half sandwich for lunch and a snack of an apple etc or nuts in the late afternoon leaves me not needing a dinner. This, of course, can get boring but I'm enjoying how much better I feel and look. Breakfast need to be more interesting and just as healthy. I've never been a cereal fan.

Leftovers
Tonight we had leftovers: Basmati rice and black beans with cilantro crema.
Leftovers from a tasting we did for some potential clients yesterday.
Here's what was on the tasting menu:
Pork Cigarillos with Pineapple Honey Jalapeno Dipping Sauce
Beef Satay Skewers with Coconut Spiked Peanut Sauce
Halibut Ceviche Shots
Ceasar Salad Bites
French Fries with Mint Mojo
Baby Greens with Pecan Crusted Goat Cheese, Plantain Chips, Mango Champagne Vinaigrette
Grilled Jerk Chicken with Pineapple Mango Salsa
Rice Pilaf
Black Beans with Cilantro Crema
Roasted Corn Relish with Lime Shallot Butter
Sorry, no images. We brought a proper camera, but we were just so busy cooking, plating and serving that we didn't have a chance to capture any images.

Guess What Was On Sale?
Blackberries!
We can't even remember what we had for dinner on January 17th. We do, however, remember what we had for dessert; blackberry cobbler! With hand-whipped cream.

Winner, Winner, Pho Dinner!
We had an early dinner on January 18th in Chinatown.
Pho at Golden Flower. Golden Flower Vietnamese Restaurant - Chinatown - San Francisco, CA We love going to Golden Flower - great food at inexpensive prices. Gemma's been going with her family since the early eighties and introduce Murray to the restaurant.
Gemma had the #1, Pho and Murray had the #40, Bun Thit Cha Gio -grilled pork over cold rice noodles with spring rolls, served with nam pla - fish sauce with lime and chiles.
We ran into a friend that we hadn't seen in years and he insisted on paying for our dinner. So, . . . winner, winner, pho dinner!
Image below of Gemma's huge bowl of pho, after she got through half of it and remembered to take a shot of it.

We are now eating marinated portabella mushroom caps marinated in worcestershire, soy, wine vinegar, tempura sauce and garlic powder. Grilled with Gorganzola and served on a grilled onion roll.
The meal seems to blend in with the San Diego life style.

Last night it was comfort food, both figuratively & literally. Chili & cornbread. Although it did get a little soupy after watching the disastrous 4th quarter & OT between the 49'ers & NY. (was going to attach a picture, but who want's to see "soupy" chili? )
