All veterans dealing with the VA bureaucracy should watch 60 Minutes tonight (Jan. 3, 2010) on CBS.

I just had to call USAA to take care of some banking business and spoke to a very helpful young man who took care of everything I needed in a matter of minutes and got me back on my way. Typical excellent service from that company. When we ended our conversation he told me "Thank you for your service to our country". What a great way to end the conversation! That may be the first time anybody has ever said that to me.

But the reason I'm writing this today is to let y'all know that USAA membership is now open to all service members who have ever served honorably. Way back after the Civil War when I joined membership was open for officers only. Now it's open for all ranks. The only qualification is "honorable service".

For those of you that are not familiar with USAA, this is a member owned company that offers life, property, health, auto (including RV), boat, etc insurance. They have a federally chartered, full service savings bank with practically no fees (no monthly service charge, practically free ATM usage and so on). They also offer mutual funds/IRA's. What am I leaving out? Oh yes, they are based in San Antonio and their customer service agents are all here in the United States. Check 'em out if you're not a member.

For the moderators: I know this sounds a bit like an advertisement, sorry for that. Let me know if you feel I'm out of line here.

Jim

Guard and Reserve qualify also. Take a look at USAA.com for a full list. They even include a couple of those 3 letter Guv'mint agencies that everybody has heard about.

And no, I don't work for them. I work for the cable company (insert your joke here).

I can vouch for USAA. Have been a member since 1986 simply because my dad served.... check it out. They most likely will beat what you have now. No, I don't work for them.
