Map stickers, when you can put it on..

Hey everyone,
Silly question, but having a serious bet riding on this I need all of your expert opinions to settle this.

I say you can't put the state sticker on your map unless you actually stay and explore the state in some way, shape, or form. At least for a few days before you can place the almighty sticker on your state map. Wifey says you can place sticker just driving through. I say that doesn't count, because, your just passing through.

Not trying to sway the votes, but I came up with a really good bet that benefits me greatly if I win. Just saying..

Anyways, let me know what you think. Really curious. Please include a short justification for your vote.

Thanks. K

You are completely correct, and your wife is wrong. Enjoy!

You have to at least spend one night in a state to justify adding a state sticker to your map...drive thru, drive by, does not count.

It’s cheating.

I concur, that you have to spend one night in the state to "Collect" it

I'd say you own the map, own the stickers, and you set your own rules...

How's that for a non-answer?

One of these days I'll find one that fits in a place in the AS that the doggie claws won't tear it up...

I'd say that by winning a bet with your wife on this, you lose.

In general it is usually safer to say “yes, dear”. However, I agree with Maggie. You have spend at least one night in a state for it to count.
Along this line, I am new and would love to start my state map but I don’t know where to find one that fits on the inside of the door. I always forget to ask those folks who have them where they got it. Thanks. Just realized I am hijacking , sorry

I will add a twist - I count driving through but have to step on terrafirma - so I count a gas stop.

Do I get to put the stickers on the map if I fly over it in an airplane?

What's the significance of the map anyway? You're trying to catalog the places you've been, right? Have you been at a place if you've just seen it fly by on the highway?

I guess my point is this. If you count the fly-over states, what's the point? If you're not taking the time to explore the area and get the local flavor, you're doing the whole "travel" thing wrong. It's not about the destination...

Map stickers, when you can put it on..

It depends if you are travel-printed or destination-oriented at the time.

We tend to be destination-oriented on most of our past trips, i.e. traveling to get somewhere, then staying there a while to do some activities for 3-4 weeks.

That may change in the future..

Drive-throughs do count. If you stop for some reason.

Do you guys count four corners as all four states if you visit and stand on the seal on the ground?

I'm with your map = your rules.

We have discussed this at length in our house. Some options:

-- Outline the state for a drive through, fill it in for an overnight stay.

-- "One sight, one night" to qualify.

-- "As soon as you've pooped inside state borders, you get to fill it in." says my 14 year old.

I asked my dog, and she looked at me like I was an idiot. There's only one way to prove you've been some place, and that is to mark it (she said). Makes sense to me!

Good suggestions here.

I like Thiels idea of outlining the state if you driven it and coloring it in if you've stayed.

The overnight is good for us too but if we spend all day in a state and explore then sleep in another state we would likely count that.

You people and your tiny states that you can drive across in less than a day. Pshaw!

Many more to go

We decided that we would only count the State if we actually camped there, just like we only get stamps in our Florida Passport from State Parks where we camp. For us it's push pins instead of stickers, and we have plans to start filling in west of the Mississippi this summer.

Pins, stickers, outlining, coloring in, ... You Missed It

Try going old school, kind of a vintage flare. If we camp in a state, or visit a specific attraction, we look for either a vintage souviner or a "re-make" decal, purchase it, and place it inside one of our closet or cabinet doors. Sometimes you can find them in a store or at an attraction, or possible on eBay.
