2016 vs 2017 F150 ecoboost ??
Wondering if the new gen 3.5 ecoboost with 10 speed transmission is all that much better the the 2016 3.5 ecoboost 6 speed transmission ?
Someone here must have good owner, realtime input .

Well, I have a 2016. I don't think you will find someone who has lots of experience with both as they are so close in years. I've wondered the same issue. I pull a 27fb. I have no problem with pulling power and the six speed is very smooth. I do think more gears may smooth the downshifting a bit, but once you get use to how ford works during download shifting, it's no problem. Tapping the brake peddle too often drops the gear range quickly. The gear range would be larger on a six speed and more noticeable than the ten. I have not driven a 2017.

I can compare a '14 eco/6speed and a '17 eco/10speed. TBH I don't notice that much difference. Gear shifting is maybe smoother (I recall the '14 having a rough shift between 3/4), maybe the engine works a little less (less noticeable turbo use). The biggest difference to me was moving to an HDPP.

As far as I can tell, there are only 2 differences between the 16 and the 17 3.5eb engine. The 16 is direct fuel injection with lower HP and torque. The 17 is combination direct injection and port fuel injectors and has higher HP and torque.
The higher HP and torque is self explanatory, but the combination direct injection and port fuel injectors is less so. With only direct injection, sometimes a buildup of crud could occur in the engine. The port injection alleviates that.
Of course, the 10 speed transmission gives more gear choices so the computer can do a better job of keeping the engine RPM in the power band.

I can't speak to the 2016 as my recent move up to the 2017 EB 3.5 L was from a 2005 Triton V8. MAN! the 2017 EB 3.5 is amazing! I never thought you could get that kind of power from a 6cyl. And the increase in MPG has be wonderful. I do like the 10 speed trans although the shift to 1st will produce a small clunk on occasion but that may be related to the "start/stop" feature. I'm still getting used to it. This may not
be much help in answering the question at hand but I've been looking for an opportunity to express my love for this truck.

Increase in fuel mileage from a Triton to a Eco Boost pulling?????
My 5.4 would tow our 30' FC and get 12 to 13 mpg, just took our maiden voyage with our 2016 Eco Boost and averaged 9 mpg. I'm not a happy camper.

2016 , 2017 model compare...
I owned a 2012 EB for 5 years; recently drove the 2016 model several times. I also took a new 2017 F150 EB King Ranch home for 24 hours and if I went with F150, that would be my choice. Logged 65 miles and I was really impressed with the difference in power and smooth shifting. I played with the 10 speed a bit, tromping on the gas at freeway speeds and also slowing down quickly. Very impressive. The 2016 is nice also, but if you have a choice and can get a good deal, go with the new engine and trany. Don't think you will be sorry.
If I would have stayed with a smaller AS, I would likely have bought the 2017 F150. tr Wife wanted me to move up since we were getting a new 28' AS and she did not want me to complain about payload anymore, so we ended up with the F250 6.7. I am very happy with this TV , but I would not hesitate on getting the 17' F150 EB if that handles your needs. Great truck and easier to park.
I will add that the new camera 360 option available on both trucks is a very nice feature when parking.

Greetings - My TV is the 2017 F150 10 speed EB and I love it. Smooth towing and plenty of get up and go. Works great with our 25FB. Last weekend we averaged 14 MPG.

Firstly, is it broken in yet? Mileage will improve with break-in
Secondly, making hp takes fuel. Once broken in, your ecoboost should do better than your Triton, if developing the same hp. If you take advantage of the increase in hp, ie faster starts, mileage will suffer.

I'm getting slightly better mpg (hand-calculated around 11 mpg) towing a wider, much-heavier trailer than I was with the '07 5.4L Triton that returned 10 mpg on a good day, and the new truck is 4WD to boot. I generally run between 65 and 70 when I can (yes I know about ST tires and take appropriate action regarding that.) I find I get slightly better mpg in 8th unless it's perfectly flat and/or there's a tailwind.
Old: 2007 F150 Supercrew short box w/ tow pkg, 5.4L Triton V8 and 3.55 limited-slip diff, 2WD, towing 24' Argosy.
New: 2017 F150 Supercrew short box w/ Max Tow, 3.5L Ecoboost and 3.55 e-locker, 4WD towing a 26U Flying Cloud.

I have a 2017 F-150, max tow, max payload, 157" wheelbase, crew, 6.5' bed, 2X4, 3.5 EB, 3.73 axle ratio, 10 speed trans. I get 22+ mpg when driving mostly 60 mph, 20 mpg when driving mostly 70 mph. I haven't towed yet.
On a long climb from near the Mississippi River valley the trans stayed in 10 gear the whole way, no need to downshift.
The ride is great. Parking is cumbersome compared w/ my Corolla.

I just drove 3500 miles for my 2017 F150 maiden voyage towing my 30ft classic.
Very smooth drive, no problems in the mountains. I averaged 12.7 mpg towing and 26 mpg not towing. my classic GVWR is 10,000 lbs.
the towing mode is very efficient and does not increase the fuel consumption.
Much happier than with my previous tow, F350 King Ranch diesel.
My F150 is a crew cab, 4x4, 5.5' bed. 3.55 ratio.

Interesting, there aren't too many that downsize with that sort of load and you are happier, why so? I would have thought that a 3.55 would have to work pretty hard for the load and mountains? What is your tongue weight and payload for the 150? What year King Ranch did you from? Do you use the truck mostly as a daily driver, what trim level did you get? Too many questions?? Thanks

My F350 KR was a 2006, very bad year, lots of costly engine trouble. My new tow has a 13,000 lbs capability, F150 XLT , 4x4, crew cab, 5.5' bed, 3.55 ratio, HD package with 10 speed transmission. We used it to go to the WBCCI rally in Escanaba. So far it's a comfy car-like ride as a daily driver.

I don't know if it's a difference between the 16 & 17 but we just made the trip to the International Rally using tow/haul and no cruise control. 14.4 mpg. I really like using cruise control but not using it seemed to make about an additional 1mpg difference. I guess I should also point out that we're pulling a '66 Overlander. Pretty light. Loaded, we're around 5K.
