You got it..
Excuse me for stepping in...but, you got the name..Look for it at WalMart first, usually the best price..It's a blue can and, has Aircraft Stripper on it..
Today's efforts was slow~ Cold, windy day..They're even forecasting "Flurries"..Got down right cold with the wind blowing, etc.
Still, I was able to work from 8 am till just after 3 pm..I got one upper front panel going and, then the side of the window..Behind one of the stainless steel guard..Not much progress with numb'd fingers and, my back was "tight" all morning..Yuck~!
No pictures, hands just too tired to push a button...
Doctor's visit early in the morning..I suspect it'll be noon time before I get back to the A/S..Oh well..
Hope everyone's doing okay with setbacks..
Garry, your 1500$ job looks mighty fine to me..Just watch those power cords..lmao, I did the very same thing on day 2..Took it back to Sears and, they gave me a brand new one..No questions asked..
Haven't stepped into a bucket yet..I keep it tied to the ladder...lol
ciao

What's flurries ??
It has gotten chilly here. 43 this morning. turned the heat on. I am still in Mississippi, slight delay on heading back to OK. I did a little clean up on the A/S. It is so nice not "having to" head out first thing and polish. Guess you figured out how easy it is to sling stuff on already waxed areas. So far water spots just wash off.
Have you noticed it takes a little extra effort on the curved panels to get the good shine ?? Or is that just me
Looking forward to some new pics from everybody.
If I will be here this week end will do the propane tanks.
Had to redo this panel to many pits to compound out needed sanding.

Oops
So sorry, Garry..I didn't see that you had replied..Maybe we crossed at the same time?..Anyway, good that you took care of it..lol
Yep, it's darn cold out..Higher elevation is expecting..Flurries..
A/S is...at over a 1000ft but, next to a warm body of water still..We'll have to wait and see.
I'm off to dinner..
Picture is looking good..Hey, those tanks of yours oughta be a push-over..
Refer: Curved panels..The ones on the rear were a push over but, the ones on the front has/had some real nasties..I'll be truthful in saying it's darn hard on the back...trying to balance myself while, standing on a ladder..I don't care if it can be folded into 18 positions...lmao, I CAN'T...
ciao

Update
Update on "Buff and Shine" wool bonnets..
I tried one yesterday and, felt that it would be something better suited for use after the hard compounding/polishing was completed. Maybe..
It turns out that the fibers are too long and, the overall diameter was 9" pads..not very effective in smearing the polish compound around for cutting thru the crud.
IMHO:
I might still use them on the Burb..
ciao
Burrr:
Cold this morning... 33 degrees.

COST
With the # of views this thread has had I guess someone would like to know the cost.
1. Harbor Frt buffer part # 46507 $29 (on sale reg $59).
2. 3M buffer pads 2 ea 5701 $46, 2ea 5705 $52, extension 5710 $7. Could have done it with 1 each pad (maybe) 2 is better.
3. Southern Shine 2 bottles ( need 3 ). $17 includes shipping.
4. 1 gal Car Bright Black Stuff (compound) $18
5. Sand Paper 600/ 1200/ 2000 $24
6. Aircraft Stripper 2 gal $34 2 cans spray stripper $10.
7. Palm Sander $29, Found hand sanding is better !!
8. Craftsman 6" polisher same size as a palm sander and good for tight spots. $14 (on sale)
9. Cyclo polisher (used) $40 used very little.
10. Wax and other polishers to test $12
11. Sweat shirts $1 each (thrift store) $5
12 Mineral Spirts 1 pint $5
Do the math and it can be done for around $300.
Why do it at all ?
A/S was in poor condition and something had to be done. Had a pro estimate stripping & polishing $3100.
I would recommend a pro if you can afford it I couldn't and had other things that were needed more (axles)
Once stripped and waxed it will have to be rewaxed twice or more times a year or you will be in worse shape than the poor clear coat you started with.
It is hard work even to get less than a pro's results.

Just a heads up having been through all of this past few years...watch the outside temperature - polish seems go get funny as the air temp gets below 65 degrees.

Thanks..
Ken J and Garry..
You are so right..I waited till it got warmer before starting out..
Spend the morning at the hospital, getting a carbuncle removed from my neck..
Still put in a full days work..From 927 am to 544 pm..I'm almost finis on the street side..Just the upper section on the curbside and the rest of the end caps to do..
I'm thinking that, come next year..I might do this all over again just to get the practice...lmao
Thanks Garry, I do believe that, we've all learned something..
Cost wise, I'd have to say it's closer to 600 or so for me..
BTW, just bought 4 new 3M wool pads today for 50$.
Not too bad..My first 2 were actually wearing out...lol
My G6 is about half used up as I had some real tough crud to remove. I think we're be able to finis the job with what I have.
No pictures..Sorry guys, I was just too tired and, DIRTY to mess with it..First thing in the am, I'll take a few.
ciao

Progress Report
Although they're few and far between, I finally got a polishing session in this morning. Had to stop when my pad got so full of glop that I had to stop to wash it out. Got to the back of the rear window on the streetside. Plan on more tomorrow morning.
Keep those reports and pictures coming

Got 4.5 hours in today!
Made very good headway today. Hope I don't pay for it tomorrow
Back hurts already anyway.
I got a good third or more of the curb side compounded. Looks pretty good.
Here's a couple of pics.
ps. flyfshr, they say on perfectpolish.com if your getting some much in your bonnet that you need to wash it, your using too much polish.

I'll never tell
Tell me now Garry... did you get the very top done
Tim: I'll show you mine if you show me yours hehehe
Looks as if you are on a roll a few 48 hr. days and you will be through and looking for a new project.
Flyfisher is looking good...
53FC glad you got the neck thing behind you and are back at it. I would think your available polishing time is getting shorter due to weather and temp. If I remember you have a rally coming up and an oppertinuity to show the "new A/S.
Keep it up guy's.

Thanks! 53....
I got another 1.5 hours in today. So 37 hours total so far.
Too hot really in the direct sunlight. I got about 4-6 hours more on the curb side for compounding.
I will have to start the cycloing hard this week, unless I decide to go over some spots again on the street side. I have some filform corrision there that's bugging me.
Don't really want to finish anyway.... what would I do with all my time
Looking good all as always...

Old Man
Hey Vern,
Who's that old man standing on the ladder next to your AS?
The AS looks pretty good, the frost is on the pumpkin here in NH, I hope you get enough good weather to finish the job. Too bad my barns full, you could use it if my AS wasn't inside.
Just a couple of jabs for a man with more ambition than me.
Mark

Aww, now you tell me...lmao
Man, I got places to go, things to see and do..
I'm not ready for the "Barn"...lol
That, "Old Man"..?
You surely must be thinking abt the one who fell back May 3, 2003??
It's gonna be a real tight finis..I got onto the project around 10 am this morning and, knocked off work just as the sun was setting behind the trees..
It slow at times..I was able to finis the panel behine the propane tanks (under the front window). Had to remove the tanks, etc so I could "fit" in there..lol After what seemed forever, I was finis (it'll have to do) put the tanks back on and, then attacked the rear bumper..Finis polishing it just as the sun was disappearing..
So far the supplies are holding out..
Plus, I received in the mail today a very nice package of "Window Wax", thanks to a very dear friend. She shall remain nameless because, I don't the rest of you guys asking for a can also...lol, I spoken for any other cans of Window Wax, that shows up..
ciao
