another way to think of it...a "turnpike" (the original device) was kind of like a modern day turn-style. (the "style" part of that word, I would imagine, probably comes from the carpentry term...like the "styles" and "rails" of a door (?) just guessing)
the roads that employed these devices were called "turnpike roads"...eventually, the "roads" was dropped, and hence the word "turnpike" was co-opted to describe the road itself.
I do know of a couple of roads in my area that are commonly referred to as "turnpikes" that aren't actually toll roads. One of them was a toll road at one time...(its nearly 400 years old); the other, I don't know if it ever was. might have been. That would be an interesting question for a local historian...

The 1 that got away.
A "TURNPIKE" is the fishy equivalent to a TURNCOAT.

Moonstruck,
Think “Motorway” with tollbooths every 50KM.
Peculiar to Eastern USA.
Western USA has Freeways….no tolls.
Alaska has Highways (3 of them).

After about 3 hours on I-476 last week, I wholeheartedly agree. When we finally got to the toll gate, I was hoping they would slip me a ten dollar bill and apologize. On the way back, we took a detour through Lancaster via Rt. 30. Compared to I-476, the driving was actually enjoyable.

After living in Lancaster County, PA for almost 40 years, you're the first person that I've ever heard say that the driving on Rt. 30 was even relatively enjoyable.
And for your prize from being the first, you're hereby awarded 2 more days of enjoyable driving on Rt. 30. . (A long trip in the PA Turnpike goes to the second place winner, and 3 roundtrips in the Lincoln Tunnel is the prize for coming in third.)
John

I did some research on those turnpikes and they both were toll roads in their earlier years:
In the late 18th and early 19th century in Massachuseets, turnpikes, as opposed to ordinary roads of the same time, are roads where gates barred travelers from continuing and at which payments were demanded for the use of the road. The privilege of building and operating turnpikes was conferred by the state legislature to "turnpike corporations". Turnpikes were constructed using private capital, were privately owned, and were operated for revenue from toll collection.
The Newburyport Turnpike was a toll road in the 1800's. The toll was removed in 1853.
There was a reference to the Plum Island Turnpike as a toll road but I couldn't find further information on when the toll was lifted.
