New York camping suggestions

Last night the Mrs. and I decided to use our longer trip time this summer to explore the New York "outback". Not sure if you locals would categorize all that as "upstate" or what. We're not interested in NYC....been there done that, but we realized we really haven't explored the rest of the state. We would be looking for both dry camping and state park/FS type hookups. The trip would be either early June or July. Suggestions of things not to miss welcome.

We camped at Robert Treman state park and had a great time hiking the surrounding area. We actually never made it to Watkins Glen but I've heard that the park there can be tough to get in with a 30'. Treman would be a good alternative.

Letchworth state park is also very popular and the park itself is nice.

We enjoyed Treman better.

NY Camping

Here's a couple of links that have useful info on NY campgrounds, there's a lot to choose from and it's a big state. Being a NYer I've been to many and most are great. The Finger Lakes area and the Thousand Islands are beautiful.

Enjoy!!!

I have lived in "Upstate" NY all my life, but I have never brought my Airstream to any of them. I camp at festivals and private lands in NY and the North East.
In my younger daze in the 60's & 70's, I have done lots of tent camping in NY. Back then state campgrounds were all beautiful.
I have not found that private campgrounds I have been too as scenic as state lands, also private grounds are in it for the money by packing camp sites tight to optimize profits.

Try looking in the Adirondacks, great lakes & mountains up there!

Near Niagra Falls, Four Mile Creek State Park. Overlooks Lake Ontario, close to US and Canadian wineries of the Niagra Escarpment.

If you want a fun time camp in the fingerlike region and make sure you buy some wine. We were there last year in the spring and it is absolutely beautiful country.

Cedar Point

Our favorite is Cedar Point State Park on the St. Lawrence seaway - careful, there is a park with a similar name, on Long Island I think.

Anyway, the views of the seaway are great and the park has a lot of spots with full hookups. Great park! The area has some nice attractions too - Weaving History Museum in Clayton, wineries, day trips into Canada, day trip to the Remington Museum in Ogdensburg, boat museum in Clayton, Singer and Bolt museums, etc.

The park fills up so reservations are needed at the time when you would be there.

We too like Four Mile Creek SP. Also Letchworth SP, which has a lot of hiking trails, and Taughannock Falls SP which is a good base for exploring Ithaca and the Finger Lakes. Taughannock Falls also has good hiking trails.

In the 70's we really liked Hamlin Beach State Park for tent camping. They now have large sites for trailers too. On a clear night, the star gazing was great. I'll include a link it's been years since we were there but I'll bet it still nice. The CCC built several stone buildings in the park that I understand are still there.

Do a Google search on adirondack ny black fly to see why you may wish to defer camping there until later in the summer

NY Camping

So glad you want to explore NY, other than the "city". So many great places.
For Niagara Falls area Four Mile Creek state park is great. The is a free shuttle from Fort Niagara (near park) to the Falls. So much to do there.
Letchworth State park is wonderful, great hiking trails, etc.
The Finger Lakes, with all the wineries, is a fun area with several state parks to choose from. Some wineries even allow your dog. Pick up a brochure.
Thousand Islands is also fantastic - be sure to take the boat tour and tour the antique boat museum - this coming from a person who hates museums!
Don't wait too long to make reservations, if possible. Have a wonderful trip!!

We got out 34' into Watkins Glen SP somewhat of a tight fit but we gotter done. The valley is awesome. Located at end of fingerlakes . Fish Creek Pond was nice too, sites are limited for larger rigs. In all the CCC parks in NY that I found. The roads are an abomination, blew the shock on the RF of my truck.

New York Camping Suggestions - Avoid This Highway!

If your route takes you along Lake Ontario, AVOID THIS HIGHWAY:

Lake Ontario State Parkway (southern coast of Lake Ontario, west of Rochester, between Carlton and Kendall)

Spent some time around Lake Placid last Sept. and loved it. If you go, be sure to take the boat tour.

As posted before. Four Mile Creek, north of Niagra Falls.

Also, Fish Creek Ponds in the Adirondacks and there is a State Park right on the Saint Laurence Seaway (Thousand Islands) in Clayton NY. Forget the name. All these offer great water front camping.

Sampson State Park

Sampson State Park is on the East side of Seneca Lake and is a spectacular huge park. There is a marina, beach, fishing, history, etc. and in the heart of many wineries. The camp sites are large and some are lake front. Quiet and Peaceful. Tin Can Tourists hold an annual rally here every September.
