Hi

The air conditioned seats are *standard* on the Platinum No need to check that extra package box

All these cute little things that get added "standard" weigh something. If it's not a feature you need, that's weight you don't need. Having to add the "Emperor's Shoes" upgrade package with 12 items in it to get the one item you need is also adding un-needed weight.

Why grumble about weight? Well, it comes off of your payload numbers. The closer you can get to *only* having the options you need, the more payload you have for your AS and other toys.

I am curious if they put the HDPP springs in and allowed you to get the 501A or 502A option packages as the moonroof supposedly doesn't come with the base '500' package.

As a note the 500 base package does come with heated and cooled power seats according to the website, so you can get HDPP with heated and cooled power seats on a 2017.

I am wondering what springs they are using in the HDPP. I understand the 2015 trucks have 300lbs more payload than the 2014 trucks, yet weigh 700lbs less. I think the chassis is pretty much the same so maybe they are using 2014 springs to get 400 lbs extra without screwing up the stance?

7850# GVWR and 2284# payload on the door. eco 4x4 screw 6.5' bed. Options It's a 500A base package.selected were the 40/console/40 heated coold seats, twin moonroof, sidesteps, spray in liner.

You can see on the ford build sites for the US and Canada that they allow different options in different markets. What I built is not that rare (for HDDP) in Canada. I saw 2 '16s on a lot in BC that were almost the same [with 2364# payload], but upgrading the mirrors, adding sidesteps and spray made the price too close to the discounted '17 to bother.

'15 is aluminum body which removed close to the difference, probably other minor changes helped remove some minor part of the weight.

The F150 configurations are a bit frustrating.

On Towing

The Max tow, pre 2015 included tow mirrors. The max tow (53C) now adds rear axle/drive 3.55 upgrade, upgraded rear bumper and brake controller - that is what I was told in 2015 and it looks to be the same. Max tow has everything in 53a.

53a will say trailer tow- it includes 4/7 pin connectors, aux tranny cooler, Class IV hitch, upgraded front sway bar and if its a 3.5 ecoboost will have an engine oil cooler

53b will just say class IV trailer hitch on the sticker- it includes 4/7 pin connectors and Class IV hitch receiver

Trailer brake controller is included with 53c but an option for 53a and 53b. Ironically, some lists show the 36-gallon tank as part of the max tow package.

On Trims

I was torn between the Lariat and the King Ranch. They had a Platimum too but...the Lariat was loaded and the cost difference for me at the time was $3200 for the King Ranch or $4500 for the Platinum if I remember correctly. The coated leather of the Lariat was not as nice as the softer KR but a friend who had the KR told me that the leather was easier to mark on the KR. The Platinum was so much like the others that I didn't really pay it much attention for the $5K more. Looking at the trucks I liked the chrome bumpers better than the painted ones and the softer leather of the KR. The Platinum had the lower of the payload ratings. It really comes down to a balance of taste and truck requirements. I went with the Lariat with few compromises. The only feature in my model year that was Platinum only was the massaging seats. Oh, and the KR and Platinum had real wood inserts.

On Payload package
When I asked about that I was told to get an XLT if that was important. Only max tow was available BUT that it may become available in the future.

Ford did change the build order sheets during the model year in 2015 so they can do it at any time.

A few ah ha items: Be aware that if you get 20" wheels as I did, you lose about 200# payload and you will also have an 18" spare, not 20". The idea is that the 70 series 18" is ABOUT the same as the 20" diameter (0.9 inch difference) and a 20" will not fit underneath.
The heated seats may need upgraded to be better cooling. I bought the engineered kit from the guy on F150 forums to add the ducting missing from the seats. Made a bit difference for mine.
I did implement the catch can for the engine- more important for the 2015/2016 models than the 2017+ models. The kit was around $300 but top notch. It prevents carbon build-up.

All this is per the 2017 order guide:

53C (Max Tow) also includes the 36-gallon fuel tank, and the 3.55 differential with 53C is the electronic locker unit rather than the open diff. On all models except "XL Base" (100A) the 53C package includes the "ProTrailer backup system" that I've never used, but it DOES include a nice bright LED in the tailgate handle that does a great job of lighting up the hitch area for better visibility backup up to a coupler in dark or dim light conditions.

53A adds an oil cooler only on the 3.5 "Ti-VCT" engine (the base naturally-aspirated V6.) I think all the other engines either include an engine-oil cooler in their base configuration or don't require one, but I don't know that last bit as a fact.

Hi

The aluminum on the new Fords does weight less. It also isn't quite as stiff. They had to boost the chassis a bit to compensate for that. They went with one chassis for the 250/350. It may be the same for the 150/250/350. That's either good news or bad news for the 150 (if true) depending on how you look at it. You have a way over designed chassis, and an extra 300 lb of steel to haul around.

@DKB_SATX Yeah, that is why I talked pre 2015, 2015 and current. I believe that is why people get confused, even sales people. The packages change from time to time- some items get added and some drop off. If a person is shopping current design used, it really pays to check. "Yes, this model has the max tow package, what year is it?" Also, on the 2017 towing guide it lists the 36 gallon tank as part of the max tow package but the build list lists it as "option only" not package content. Probably a mistake but two different pieces of information. You are correct, it is a part of the package for 2017.

Frame on 150 is not same as 250/350, Uncle Bob. They went with a new frame and suspension in 2017's on the 3/4 & 1T models. The new F250 rides very nice, especially when towing an AS... drive a 2016 F250 and a 2017 F250...night and day difference in the ride and feel.

Yep, ever changing. I was crazy waiting for the 2015 models. In my area, they were not readily available until June '15. I bought mine the last week of June 2015. Since then they have made several changes- engine redesign, 10 speed, sync III, changes to options packages. It is remarkable how innovations come so quickly.

Hi

It won't be very long before we start trying to figure out whatever they do for 2018 ...

Interesting set up you were able to get. I guess the springs really are heavier duty.

On the US Ford website you can't really get any options with the HDPP. Although it does say the 500 base package comes with heated and cooled seats which is pretty nice. I have all the other options on mine but really dont need that stuff.

I ran through a manual quote with the dealer, and he said HDPP option could be ordered on some models, and was intended for camper units on the bed. Said also, it was a real stiff ride without the weight when using empty...like an older F250!

meh. They almost never know what they are talking about. I knew more about this than my dealer just by reading numerous ford manuals.

haha. Like an old F250 Heavy Duty? I sometimes say HDPP is like having an F200. I find the ride difference quite obvious, but not as bad as a new F250.

Hi

A few of the dealer guys *do* know what they are talking about. They pull trailers around on a regular basis and have done so for years and years. If you can figure out which one that guy is, you can actually get somewhere pretty fast digging through truck info. Indeed, the other 95% are likely pretty clueless ....

Well put uncle bob. Knowledgeable sales people have become rare. My father's tv went out today and we went to the store with about an hour of brand model research under our belt. We got there and the sales guy sold a brand to my dad with a supposed 4 year manufacture warranty HDR etc. we got home and looked it up. One year warranty. The Four year warranty was no longer offered after April 1 2017.

The same with trucks or anything, We have to go in with a bit of knowledge but even then we have to confirm and check everything or else take the risk of being duped.
