Technical explanation for the curious— feel free to ignore if you're not curious…

There are several families of stainless steels with different physical properties. A basic stainless steel has a 'ferritic' structure and is magnetic. These are formed from the addition of chromium and can be hardened through the addition of carbon (making them 'martensitic') and are often used in cutlery. However, the most common stainless steels are 'austenitic' - these have a higher chromium content and nickel is also added. It is the nickel which modifies the physical structure of the steel and makes it non-magnetic.

Thanks for all the info.

If it's aluminum, it's probably anodized which is generally non-conductive while the st-st would be conductive.

I'm betting the ladder is polished st-st.

At the risk of getting off topic, I knew there would be some here that are familiar with the 'ring and AMG! I was at the Monterey Historic races at the old Laguna Seca Raceway last weekend and an Airstream rep brought a 2014 Interstate to the "History of the Autobahn" car meet (sponsored by Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi), and he was really excited that an actual Interstate owner was present He wasn't too familiar with the Interstate but when he asked me what modifications I made or would want on the Interstate, I told him that AS should look into adapting lithium batteries so that we wouldn't have to plug in or use the generator to run the air conditioner like Roadtrek's E-Trek. His friends from Nissan were there and piled on to that idea (the Nissan guys were very familiar with their electric cars). This may happen when battery technology improves as lithium batteries are very expensive at this point.

I may have said this before— apologies if I have— but the one modification that I'd like to see above all others is sliding steps for the front doors like the one for the sliding side door. Especially if they could offer a retrofit kit for older Interstates so I wouldn't have to trade mine in to get them. Those molded-in steps are ankle-breakers!

We remind ourselves that those steps are good for our aging knees, and just always use the handgrip.

Having an 06, we have non-sutomated side steps and bed, and like the simpler way. Less things to break and wear out.

We have replaced the latch in the cargo door already, worn out from wear. It's a good thing, though!

Love our Interstate!

Maggie.

I would still like to have a power slider door.

I think it's available on a Sprinter. I don't know if it would be retrofittable now.

Naaah, no power door for us.

When the latch went on the cargo door, we had to get in and out thru the rear.....well, I did and the grands did, as we were headed to Brookfield Zoo for the weekend.

They loved it, I found it a VERY high step.

For what it's worth, you can get a step that fits into the trailer hitch receiver if you plan on doing that again.

Your latch broke? Funny you should say that. In the past couple of weeks, I've noticed that, if I slide the side door ALL the way open, and try to close it from inside, it gets stuck back there. Opens fine from inside or outside, and closes fine from outside. Which tells the that somewhere between the button at the top of the inside handle and the hold-open latch, there's a disconnect.

Don't, and we now have a lovely hitch cover there., which I posted elsewhere on these forums.

Hmmmm, that's not what ours did.

You may have a different kind of problem.
