Instapot — how big?

I'm thinking of giving my wife an Instapot.

But ... which size?

Would use it primarily at home but might take it on the road.

Just the two of us.

What might Instapot users recommend?

We went with the 6 quart even though it's usually only my wife and I. This leaves us just the right amount of leftovers to enjoy for the remainder of the week!

And, by the way, my wife loves it!

I have 6qt. At home and 3qt. Is under the tree for me from my son for the camper. I also like leftovers and freeze servings when using the bigger one. If you don't like leftovers, the 3 qt. Will do.

I have both the 6 qt. at home and the 3 qt. on the RV.
There's not a lot of difference in the footprint between the two.
The three quart has a shorter pot. It might change how you stack things inside, especially on a steamer rack.
I like the 6 qt. but I wonder if I'd rather have the Shark Foodi with the browning lid? (It's really big in footprint.)

OBTW, I thought I was wise to get the one with the most features only to discover I don't use much of them at all.
I'd like one with "Pressure cook", "Saute'" "Slow cook".
Keep it simple..."On/Off"

Hi

Will you be running the pot on an inverter? If so, check the power ratings on the inverter and on the pot.

We run a 6QT at home mostly and a 3QT in the trailer.

I have 3, 6, and 8 quart models at home. The larger the pot the longer it takes to pressurize and depressurize. We use the 3 quart for eggs, rice and sides like veggies. I use the 8 quart for chili and stews and stuff I know I want extra of for leftovers or to vacuum pack and freeze or for large things like ribs or chicken. I cook for 3-4 people usually and it’s not uncommon to have both the small and large pots going at the same time.

So I’m pretty sure the 6 quart will be assigned trailer duty. I’ve never had the luxury of electricity while tent camping, but I sure do like keeping cleanup simple and being able to walk away from cooking and not worry about it burning or being unsafe. And we all love instant pot steel cut beans, oatmeal, and rice.

I have the 3qt.. I store it inside the oven in my 23CB. Generally, it makes 4 servings of everything. So, 2 meals for 2 of us.

If I didn’t have a trailer, I’d probably have bought the 6qt so as to have more leftovers. But 6qt is too big for my trailer.

It is just the two of us and I greatly prefer the 3 quart for camping. The footprint is much smaller and the pot will fit inside of the fridge without shelving modification! FYI, we have a small fridge in the Interstate.... The 6 quart pot would fit, but I had to remove the drain line temporarily. The 3 quart will cook plenty for two meals for each of you if cooking chili, etc. I have had 6 quart versions, but all have found new homes with relatives.

FYI there is an existing Instapot thread with 200+ posts, many of which discuss the various sizes:

Hi, we bought the 6 quart and it was just too large for two people so I returned it and bought the 3 quart model. We are not big eaters and the three quart makes enough for us to last almost a week.

Thermomix

Depending on your budget, you may want to look at a ThermoMix. It will also allow you to make a larger variety of things however it is expensive. I have one that I take to make pizza dough, mashed potatoes and a number of other main course dishes. I use it more than my cook top and it works great.

Definitely the smallest. We love it, use it all the time, never needed the capacity of the large InstaPot. In fact, when we used the bigger pot it encouraged us to cook too much food, much of which was wasted. Small unit is right-sized for two people, you still wind up with left-overs, and it is far easier to store. If you have company, cook another way or add side dishes to the InstaPot-cooked main dish. Our 6 quart stays home now, our 3 quart stays in the Airstream. Both get used a lot.

3 quart Instapot stores easily in our airstreams. And yes you still have leftovers. Go online to the blue Jean chef she has awesome books on Insta pot cooking. On eBay you can buy several of her books 6 to $15 a great deal. She also has step-by-step videos available on YouTube .William Sonoma sells a few accessories, such as a stand for hard boiling eggs. And if you want to still Include a bouquet. You most certainly are good to go. Jasmine rice is the very best. And it also will make your airstream smell fabulous. I make that at least once a week. 3 cups of jasmine rice 3 cups of chicken broth. 14 minutes. Even my dogs like a scoop in there dinner. We are having guest tomorrow and will be cooking a complete Yankee pot roast in 50 minutes. Insta pots are awesome. What a great husband and great gift.

I bought a 5 qt first, then the 3 qt after it came out, the latter of which is much more suited to cooking for 1-2, and for travel.

The 3 qt just stores so much better in the Interstate, and is proportional.

Instant Pot Size

Size does matter. 8 qt. at home, 3 qt. on the road.
