If you are a couple, it is easier for.one to drive while the other plays look out. This leads to the "couple of what?" jokes, because the lookout has to prepare - gas stations especially. There are certain brands like Wawa which are known for having 15 or more islands, plenty of room to circle the station, and diesel on the outside two or three pumps. Google earth is your friend when scouting ahead.

Likewise most truck stops are good for trailers but not knowing can lead to real problems. Never need gas anywhere near Aspen Colorado is all I can say about that.
Having a fuel can may be your best fallback. It is no fun to hump a six gallon gerry can of diesel uphill half a block to a church parking lot (times 3!) but it beats not having a can in the first place. Sometimes people will jump in and be very helpful, but also carry a siphon with a pump just in case. I have 2, one for fuel, one for DEF.
Your worst day camping can make the funniest story... a few days after the fact. (No water on board + a very rich potluck dinner and 200 miles down the road... cheap box-o-wine is good for more than braising chicken!)

Right now we're in a 40' MH towing a Lincoln MKT, so we're about 65' or so long. Stopping to see the town is a challenge, so we don't do it that way. As was mentioned above, we like to stay a couple of days and explore in the car.

When we get the Airstream (hopefully soon) we'll do the same thing. I don't plan on getting fuel while towing, though, so the last thing before going to the campground before a travel day will be a stop for fuel. When we unhook, the next stop for the truck will be for fuel.

DB5400, The comments about trying the lifestyle are valid. You seem to be focused on destination campgrounds. I recommend you drive to some of the state parks, COE sites, and more upscale facilities to see if they deliver for you. Drive around and choose an appealing site. Check online to see if it’s available (or a similar one) when you would want it. Practice planning an entire trip. Use online campground reviews. If that seems like fun at the end, you are camper material.
