Battery Box Lock

Taking delivery of the Flying Cloud this week. I'm concerned about theft while in storage.. primarily the batteries. I'm looking at the Yakima Ripcord Locking Straps. Any comments or suggestions are much appreciated.

Battery Compartment Lock

You can get the same lock that is used for the outside storage and have it keyed the same. It should be under $10.00. I would not think you have much too worry about.

I would be more concerned with the propane tanks. Just drill a hole in the spin off holder and put a pad lock on it.

Hope this helps. Have a great new year and enjoy your new trailer.

There is a general thought that a dedicated thief will defeat any lock. So a simple padlock may be sufficient to slow down the casual thief. Believe you can drill a hole in each side of the battery box that will facilitate the use of a lock on either side.

Alternative approach - the electrical system has parasitic loads that run down the charge while in storage. So pulling the batteries and taking them home would be one method of protecting them from theft. It would also allow a periodic charge to keep the batteries above 50% to extend their life. Alternatively install a disconnect switch to cut the parasitic loads.

Best approach - you can eventually replace with AGM and relocate the batteries to inside the trailer, but that costs a bit. If you do, upsize the conductors.

You can use your insurance, but at $100 deductable, you still take a hit.

Good luck with your considerations. Pat
