Black adhesive behind insulation.

Anyone know what the black adhesive behind the insulation is?

It seems to melt with paint stripper.

I would like to remove it, is there an easier way.. anyone done this?

On trailers as old as ours its a modified asphalt, example: The frame paint on mine was a waxy asphalt with a little creosote-like properties kicker BUT for the '73 I have the pink contact adhesive sprayed on (major repair/rehab sometime?).

You might try one of the semi-gel strippers with a sheet of polyethylene cover to keep it from evaporating and letting it sit XX minutes X hours etc until the base layer softens. Can you get remote sourced air and a 110% spark-less workspace for the duration?
