Airstream Distancing

Last week we had to make our way back from New Mexico to our home state of insurance and hometown. Everytime we hit the road, I am reminded how beautiful the West is.

But...we all need a little time apart from each other. Be safe out there.

Another great video!

Forgive me for adding a plug for your 2018 thread, with Chris Stapleton’s “Traveler” as the theme song:

Outstanding!

Thanks again,

Peter

Hope your "time apart" is working out, as we all take a breather from traveling.

What a land in which we are graced to roam!

Great video and music! We were in that area last fall. Stayed a little over a week at the NM state park a couple hours south of where you were (were you at it Elephant Butte?) and a little north of Las Cruces. It is a beautiful area.

We had a spa day at an area near you and then drove up to check out that State Park. The pictures in your video are great but they can't capture how beautiful that area is with the height over the lake and the hills rising out of the water.

Green chili's in Hatch and lunch at some famous local burger place that adds those chilli's to the burgers / lemonade / everything. Very relaxing area of the country and State parks were like $14 a day from my recollection.

The Wolverine and Little Death Hollow

With a little (well, a lot) help from friends, a local couple and an Airstream couple, we managed to distance ourselves a bit farther. Maybe next time we'll skip July because we barely made it back to the trucks after hiking through the night. Good thing we had friends to help carry the load out.

Great video! I’m guessing you really have to check out the weather forecast for rain, not only in that area but anywhere nearby that would have runoff down to those slot canyons during your hike.

Attachment 375251Yes, GOUSC, checking the weather report is a must. I checked out this hike by watching a video on YouTube but the season was spring and there was a lot of hiking through ice cold water thigh and waist deep. The entire area is notorious for rescues and deaths, either from dehydration or flash flooding. So yeah, you called it. It's best to check with the Visitor Center at the west end of Escalante or the owners at Utah Canyon Outdoors; those folks know the local terrain and have experience with the changing seasons. We had to take a nap at the river, and then turn right around and hike back through the night to avoid the heat; I wasn't gonna make it if I had to hike during the day. We took a break and slept from 2300 to 0400 in a wash because it was the first week of July. Late July's monsoon weather no doubt could bring on a flash flood; those are two weeks to avoid backpacking.

It was really hard on me and the wife but a trip I won't forget. I will tell you that our Airstream shower and air conditioning were never more appreciated. I pretty much stayed in bed for a couple days. It was SOOOOO good to be able to come home to an Airstream!

Westcoastas - I figured you guys would've checked the weather. I just wanted to throw it out there for others who might want to check out the area and not consider the flash flood aspect.

We were at Antelope Slot Canyons near Lake Powell (I think) years ago. The tour guide told us about people that just show up and get caught up in the flash floods. I wouldn't have occurred to me until they mentioned it. My understanding is the rain does not even need to be in that area to affect you in a life threatening way.

They are cool to be right in the middle of them!

Keep all hands and feet inside the vehicle...and just calm down.

From spring and summer outside Escalante...

Nice video / music. Great escape from the pandemic. Curious if some of the NM shots were White Sands / Hatch / Elephant Butte?
