Got locked out of 1998 Classic and key would not work

We had been locked out in the past and learned to keep a key hidden outside. The other night my son was staying in our Airstream and went outside at midnight to get something and could not get back in. He found the key but it didn't work either. He finally woke up enough people in the park that one had a power drill and took the door off the hinges and got him in. We tried all our keys and none of them would unlock the door. It had worked fine the day before. My husband insists that he pulled too hard on the handle and bent something. If you help the inside slide along the key will work. Is this a lubrication issue? Should we buy a new locking mechanism?
