Hello all,
Pulled and want to test pump before I replumb everything and want to make certain I wire right from battery. If memory serves 110 is black hot, white neutral. Thinking 12v is opposite, white is hot? Thanks so much, I really appreciate your

"Thinking 12v is opposite, white is hot?"

No, in typical RV wiring white is negative and black is positive. However, I have heard of cases where a factory worker screwed up and got it backward. So I strongly recommend checking DC connections with a multimeter to make sure the +/- polarity is what you think it is.

I googled, and answers were all over the map and some thought white was only ground for outside lighting but positive inside? I hooked up white as positive and tested great. Hopefully didn't do any damage if wrong. Thanks!

Hi from Colorado: I'm a transplanted Iowan. I had a 66 Trade Wind 24', one size up from yours. Did your pump pump water? It may run just fine backwards. You can always test the 12vDC wiring by simply taking your meter and connecting the white wire to ground, say the trailer window frame. If you get zip, nada, zero, then you know it is a negative ground wire. If you get 12vDC, then you know it is a positive.

Here is the electrical wiring diagram from my 66 Trade Wind owner's manual. It may help you.

Thanks David, yes it pumped water like it should but you're right, sometimes these things work in reverse polarity as well. Hopefully no damage if I wired wrong. I re-plumbed today and re-installed pump and will be filling tank and testing systems tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Thanks again! Greg

I think you're all half right.
In marine 12v. wiring, white is negative and red is positive.

Hi mysilverbullet. I see you are located in Iowa. I'm an Iowan born and raised. I have 10 years growing up in Des Moines, high school in Clarion, then Ames and Iowa State, and finally 10 years in Spencer. My work to me to the Minneapolis area, and my retirement took me to Colorado.

I did a lot of work on my old 66 Trade Wind. Really liked that trailer. But I decided to sell it and find another project. My Overlander isn't as unique as the mid sixties trailers, but it will be more usable for our family. I considered the Trade Wind to "delicate" for family use, what with the special windows, vents, door lockset, cargo compartment doors, and what all else. My sons and their kids can be pretty hard on a trailer and they are not real experienced Airstreamers.

I have always known 12 volt dc is black or yellow for negative. Switched positives can be any color or striped. Mostly, red is direct 12 volt positive. That doen't mean Airstream wired to any standard but their own.
